Junior Sami Grasso's Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Triumph at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Sami Grasso scored off of a corner kick in the 80th minute lifting the Tribe women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra in Hempstead on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 8-6-0, 2-3-0 in league action, while the Pride drops to 7-7-1, 1-5 in CAA play.

Hofstra controlled the early stages of the match and fired four of the match's first five shots. The first three Pride chances weren't on target, but the final chance was put on target by Kristin Desmond, and was saved by junior Samantha Johnson.

W&M picked up the pace and fired three of the next four shots. The first came off of the foot of Grasso, but was saved by Ashley Wilson. In the 24th minute sophomore Mackenzie Kober missed high, before junior Rachel Moore missed wide in the 27th minute.

The Tribe had a couple of more chances, before the end of the first stanza. Grasso put a shot on frame in the 41st minute, before Moore missed just wide in the 42nd minute.

Like the first, Hofstra opened the second period with an offensive birage. In the 47th minute, Sabrina Barton missed wide, before Johnson had to come up with a save on a shot from Desmond. The final shot of the flurry came from Barton again, but it was wide.

In the 60th minute the Tribe got its offense started again when Grasso had her shot stopped by Mehring. Later in the 63rd minute, senior Clara Logsdon pushed a header  high, before Moore had a shot stopped by Mehring in the 67th minute. The rally continued as Grasso put another shot on target, but it was saved.

Off of a corner kick in the 80th minute, the Tribe broke the scoreless tie. Moore lined up the corner and sent the ball into the box. Grasso was able to get on the end of it and kick it into the back of the net. The junior's third goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

Grasso nearly doubled the lead with two quick chances right after her goal. The junior clanged a shot off of the post, before her rebound chance went just wide.

The Tribe outshot the Pride 13-10, which included a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Grasso led the way with a match-high eight shots, including five on-goal, while Moore registered three shots.

Johnson recorded her first career solo shutout and first Tribe win in goal. She made three saves in the team's sixth shutout of the season.

The Green and Gold returns home for the final time in the 2016 regular season next weekend. W&M hosts Delaware on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m., before welcoming Drexel on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
