WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the second straight game junior
Sami Grasso found the late game-winner as the William & Mary women's soccer team dropped Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware, opening their Homecoming festivities on Friday night at Albert-Daly Field. With the win, the Tribe improves to 9-6-0, 3-3-0 in league action, while the Blue Hens fall to 3-13-0, 2-5-0 in league action.
W&M took advantage of a Delaware miscue in just the second minute of the match. W&M sent a cross into the box that a Blue Hen defender tried to clear. Her clearance attempt ended up in the back of their net, giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe controlled the possession for most of the time following the goal and fired seven of the next eight shots. In the stretch, W&M turned two on target from junior
Sami Grasso and redshirt freshman
Sarah Segan.
Delaware picked up its attack and fired six shots in a span of 12 minutes midway through the period. Natalie Zelenky turned two on frame, while Nikki Adams had the other. However, junior goalkeeper
Samantha Johnson made easy work of them.
Just like the opening half, W&M controlled the opening moments of the second stanza. The Tribe fired the first four shots of the period. Senior
Clara Logsdon missed a pair of headers high as she sandwiched that around shots put on frame by classmate
Haley Kavanaugh and Segan. Once again Delaware's Kailyn Rekos stood strong to preserve the 1-0 deficit.
The Blue Hens found the equalizer in the 66th minute. Jillian Vassallo sent Zelenky free down the left side. Zelenky entered the left side of the box and sent a low shot into the lower right corner of the net. Her sixth of the season evened the score at 1-1.
W&M went back to the offensive following the goal, but couldn't find the winner with a furry of two shots, including a free kick in the 72nd minute. Moore sent the ball into the box and found the head of Logsdon, who put it off of Rekos. The rebound landed at the feet of Segan and her sprawling shot rolled just wide of the empty cage.
For the second straight match Grasso found the late winner, this time in the 87th minute. The Tribe played the ball into the box, but it was intercepted by a Blue Hen defender. However, sophomore
Charlotte Hyland never gave up on the play and poked the ball through to Grasso. The junior buried the winner in the right corner of the goal, giving the Tribe a 2-1 lead.
W&M nearly doubled up the Blue Hens in shots, 21-11, including a 13-5 lead in shots on-goal. Segan fired a match-high eight shots with six on goal, while Grasso, Logsdon, and Kavanaugh each fired three.
Johnson earned her second straight victory in goal for the Tribe. She made four saves on the net.
The Green and Gold conclude the regular season home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they host Drexel at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The match will also serve as the team's Senior Day as W&M will honor its five seniors following the match. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
