WILMINGTON, N.C. – Two second half goals led UNCW to a 2-0 victory over the William & Mary women's soccer team on Friday night in Wilmington. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 10-7-0, 4-4-0 in Colonial Athletic Association action, while the Seahawks improve to 8-5-3, 2-3-2 in league play.
After a 35-minute delay for inclement weather, the first half was played as a battle of possession. The teams combined to fire just five combined shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
UNCW had three of the shots, and put the only chance on frame in the half. Madison Melnick opened up the shooting when she fired high in the eighth minute, before Moa Jarl missed wide left in the 12th. Katie McGrath fired on frame in the 19th minute, but junior
Samantha Johnson was there for the stop.
W&M had two chances in the first half with shots, but neither was put on target. Off of corner kick, redshirt freshman
Sarah Segan missed wide right, before junior
Sami Grasso had a shot blocked in the 32nd minute.
The Tribe nearly jumped up to an early advantage with a goal in the 54
th minute. Senior
Haley Kavanaugh turned a shot on target and got it by the goaltender, but a UNCW defender cleared it off of the line for the team save.
UNCW took advantage of a Tribe miscue and took the lead with a goal in the 56
th minute. Serenity Waters forced a Tribe turnover, which started a breakaway. Waters, who was now on a one-versus-one with the keeper fired her shot on the far post, giving UNCW a 1-0 lead.
The Seahawks looked to build their lead following the goal and had a few chances to do so. W&M defended three corner kicks in a row perfectly. In the 74th minute, Callie McClain fired a shot tat was blocked, before Savannah Andrews pushed her shot wide left.
UNCW doubled its lead with a goal in the 79th minute. Jarl sent a through that found Brittany Cline 15 yards out in the penalty area. Cline fired her chance into the back of the net to catapult the Seahawks out to a 2-0 lead.
The Tribe had two more chances following the second goal. In the 81st minute, junior
Rachel Moore turned a shot on frame, but Carolyn Huddy saved it. In the final minute, senior
Kady Kriner fired a shot that was blocked, and the Tribe couldn't muster anything on the ensuing corner kick.
UNCW outshot the Tribe 9-6, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on-goal. Kavanaugh was the lone Tribe player with multiple shots firing two. Johnson made two saves in goal on the night.
The Green and Gold conclude the regular season with a match at the College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 23. Kickoff between the Tribe and Cougars is scheduled for 1 p.m.
