CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior
Rachel Moore scored a penalty kick in the second half, and the William & Mary women's soccer team hung on to earn a 1-1 draw at College of Charleston in the season finale Sunday. With the decision, the Tribe finishes the regular season 10-7-1, 4-4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Cougars are now 10-6-3, 3-3-3 in league action.
Charleston controlled the play for a majority of the first half and fired the first four shots of the match. All three shots were off frame, but the Cougars had chances from Laura Ortega, Jessica Schifer, and Tracey Webster.
The Cougars opened the scoring with a goal in the 32nd minute. Raymara Barreto dished a feed to Ortega who was right in front of the goal. Ortega fired a low shot into the net, pushing CofC to a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, W&M picked up its pressure and fired three shots, before the end of the stanza. Freshman
Charlotte Hyland and senior
Haley Kavanaugh fired shots wide, before Kavanaugh had a shot stopped by Lauren Killian in the 42nd minute.
The Tribe came out of the gates in the second half looking for the equalizer. Hyland fired the first shot just a minute in that was saved by Killian. Off of the ensuing corner kick, junior
Sami Grasso missed high.
W&M found the equalizer with a PK in a 73rd minute. A Tribe player was brought down in the box earning the penalty. Moore stepped to the spot and buried her chance. Moore's sixth of the season made the score 1-1.
Each team had a chance following the equalizer. W&M's was first, when Grasso turned a shot a frame that was stopped by Killian. Off of a corner kick, Maddy Brill-Edwards fired from distance, but redshirt junior
Grace Smith, who returned from injury, made the stop.
The Tribe controlled most of the play in the overtime periods and fired the only two shots of the periods. Both came in the second overtime with the first coming off of the foot of freshman
Sarah Segan in the 107th minute, but she pushed it wide. W&M had the final look as time expired, off of a free kick, and Moore found Grasso open in the box. However, the junior pushed her shot just wide.
Despite the tie, W&M did outshoot the Charleston 9-5, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on-goal. Grasso led the Tribe with three shots, while Kavanaugh fired two. Smith recorded the only Tribe save in the match.
With the point, the Tribe did secure a berth in the 2016 CAA Women's Soccer Championship. W&M will play a game next Sunday, but full details will be released later this afternoon.
