WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Colonial Athletic Association foe Elon on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 7-5, 1-2 in league action, while Elon improves to 7-5-1, 2-1-0 in CAA play.
William & Mary controlled the possession for most of the first half, firing nine first half shots. In just the second minute, freshman
Charlotte Hyland missed high. In the 18th minute, junior
Haley Kent put a shot on target that was saved by Taylor Mohr. W&M's best first half look came on a feed from Kent to redshirt freshman
Sarah Segan, but her shot was saved Mohr.
However, Elon took the lead with a goal in the 37th minute. Nyah Spearman sent a long ball that sprung Taylor Paradoski free down the left side of the field and into the box. Paradoski took a low shot into the right corner of the goal to make the score 1-0.
Just two minutes later, Paradoski struck again for the Phoenix. This time off of a free kick that Sue Anderson sent in, Rakel Jonsdottir was able to flick into the penalty area. Paradoski was able to control it and fire a shot into the middle left of the goal.
The Tribe came out on the offensive to start the second half, firing four of the first five shots of the half. Both Hyland and Segan each missed wide in the 48th minute. Later in the half, senior
Haley Kavanaugh put a shot on target that was saved by Mohr. The final chance in the flurry came from senior
Clara Logsdon in the 62nd minute, but it sailed high.
Off of a counter attack, Elon netted its third goal of the day. Paradoski sent a pass into the box that found Tori Baliatico on the right side. Baliatico fired her chance into the left of the goal making it 3-0.
The Green and Gold's best chance of the day came in the 69th minute off of a free kick. Junior
Elysse Branton took a shot right off of the kick that hit the crossbar. The rebound bounced out in front where Segan had her shot blocked.
Despite the setback, W&M outshot the Phoenix 18-9, which included a 7-4 advantage in shots on-goal. Branton, Segan, and Kober each fired three shots for the Green and Gold, while Grasso and Hyland each had two.
The Tribe returns to action when they hit the road for the first time in CAA play. The Green and Gold travels to Northeastern on Friday, Oct. 7, before heading to Hofstra on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kickoffs are schedule for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
