Seniors Shine in Women's Soccer Senior Day Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team scored two first half goals, and hung on late picking up a 2-1 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Albert-Daly Field. Redshirt freshman Sarah Segan and senior Kady Kriner scored in the victory. With the win, the Tribe, which won their third straight, improves to 10-6-0, 4-3-0 in CAA play, while the Dragons 8-6-3, 4-2-2 in league action.

With the result the Tribe women's soccer team also secures a winning record for the 2016 season. It is the NCAA record 36th consecutive winning season, which is every year the program has been in existence.

William & Mary sprung out to an early lead on just its second shot of the afternoon. Senior Haley Kavanaugh sent a feed into the box that found Segan on the right side of the area. Segan took a dribble and planted her shot off the lower left post and in. Her ninth of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

The Tribe still continued to mount pressure and had a few chances for its second goal following the early tally. Right after the goal Kavanaugh nearly scored, but sailed her shot high. In the 18th minute, Segan had a shot saved, before Kober had one stopped in the 29th minute. The final solid look came when junior Sami Grasso clanked one off of the post.

W&M added to its lead before the break with a great individual effort from Kriner. The senior intercepted a throw-in deep in Drexel territory and raced down the left side of the field. When she entered the area she fired her shot into the back of the net. Her second of the year made it 2-0.

Drexel did fire five shots in the first half, while turning two on target. Vanessa Kara fired the first two chances on target in the 11th minute, before she tried again in the 18th minute. The final shot on target came off of a free kick in the 40th minute. Nicolette Wilkins turned a header on frame. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Johnson stopped all three chances.

The Dragons got back within one in the 53rd minute. Madison Dunn sent Kara free alone with the keeper. Kara dribbled around the keeper and scored into the empty net cutting the lead 2-1.

DU added some pressure immediately following the goal. In the 58th minute, Kara put a shot on frame, before Maddy Moyer pushed one wide. Off of a corner kick three minutes later, Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausboll turned a header on that had to be saved by Johnson, before the Dragons missed high on the rebound.

The Tribe began to look for its third goal, and had some strong chances midway through the second half. The first came on a shot from Segan that had to be saved. In the 69th minute Kober found space close to the keeper, but sailed her shot just high. The final shot in the spurt Kriner missed high in the 72nd minute.

W&M's final two chances were probably their best two in the stanza. Segan tried a fancy shot as she was running out of space, but it bounced high, before Kriner rocketed another that had to be stopped.

The Dragons had a pair of last-ditch efforts in the final five minutes. In the 85th minute, Kara missed high from distance. Finally off of a free kick with under a minute to play and 10 players in the box, Kylie Strong directed a header that was saved by Johnson.

W&M edged Drexel in the shooting margin 16-14, but both teams each fired seven shots on-goal. Segan led the Tribe with six shots, while Kriner fired three.

Johnson recorded her third straight victory in goal for the Green and Gold. She made a career-high six saves in the victory.

The Tribe concludes its regular season with the CAA's Southern road trip next weekend. The Tribe travels to UNCW on Friday, Oct. 21, before heading to College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 23. Kickoffs are set for 7 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
