Field Hockey Upends New Hampshire, 3-2

Box Score
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Maria Jose Pastor scored her first goal of the season and sophomores Emma MacLeod and Cammie Lloyd added second-half tallies to lead the William & Mary field hockey team to a 3-2 win over New Hampshire on Friday night at Busch Field. The Tribe upped its season mark to 4-3, while the Wildcats, who own victories over then-No. 18 UMass and last season's CAA regular season champion Northeastern, fell to 2-4.

An even first half on chances saw both teams with opportunities to get on the board. The Wildcats attempted the first five shots of contest, but could not push one across. Senior goalkeeper Meredith Savage came up big on a few occasions for the Green and Gold. She made one save in the opening period and thwarted a potential ninth-minute breakaway chance. UHN's Katie Audino deflected a Tribe pass and looked to have a break chance into the circle, but Savage was quick off her line to push the ball away.

Lloyd nearly broke the scoreless first half on a semi-break chance in the 23rd minute. With a defender on her back, the Tribe sophomore penetrated the circle, cut to the right and sent a shot toward the post, but UNH goalkeeper Melissa Rize made the diving save.

W&M finally broke through at the 28:46 mark on a nice combination on the outside and a diving finish from Pastor. Senior Pippin Saunders found freshman Alayna Tomlinson along the left flank. The Green and Gold rookie sent a hard cross toward the back post where Pastor dove in to punch it into the right boards for her first goal of the campaign. It was also the first career point of Tomlinson's career.

Less than five minutes into the second half, MacLeod doubled the Tribe lead to 2-0. She carried the ball along the left side of the circle, cutting toward the end line and finishing from a sharp angle for her fourth goal of the season.

New Hampshire answered just 1:44 later with its first goal of the game to cut the gap back to a single marker. Amidst a scrum in the area, Meg Flatley collected a deflected ball and was able to push it into the left boards past a diving Savage to cut the Tribe lead to 2-1 with 28:54 left.

W&M nearly extended the lead on back-to-back penalty corner opportunities in the 53rd minute. On the second chance, senior Esty Byrd lifted a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked by the UNH goalkeeper. The rebound spilled over to MacLeod, but Rize was again up to the task, making the kick save.

A penalty corner in the 57th minute finally resulted in the Tribe's third goal of the contest. On the play, the ball made its way outside the circle and eventually to sophomore Erin Menges at the top of the area. She laid a pass off to classmate Cammie Lloyd on the left side, and her shot found the right boards. The helper was Menges' team-leading sixth of the season, which also moved her into a tie for the CAA lead, while Lloyd pushed her goal total to five.

The visiting Wildcats quickly pulled back to within a goal this time 1:51 later.  Lloyd was given a green card at the 56:15 mark setting up UNH with a man-advantage, and they cashed it in. Gianna Bensaia converted on a hard shot from the right side of area into the right boards for her second goal of the season with just 12:01 remaining.

The W&M defense held strong the rest of the way as the team's traded possession for the final 12 minutes. The Tribe and Wildcats each finished with 10 shots on the evening as the Green and Gold put eight on frame compared to UNH's five. W&M also held a 5-2 cushion in penalty corner with all five chances coming in the second half. Savage recorded three saves in cage for the Tribe, while Rize added five for the Wildcats.

The Tribe faces its third nationally-ranked opponent in the last four matches when it travels to No. 4 Virginia on Monday night. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start time at the UVA Turf Field in Charlottesville.
