WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (May 19, 2015) – William & Mary lacrosse standout Ellen Shaffrey was awarded the Lord Botetourt Medal, one of W&M's most prestigious honors, at Commencement during the weekend.
The award is presented to one undergraduate student “who has most distinguished him- or herself in scholarship” each year.
A team captain, Shaffrey recently wrapped up her collegiate career as one of the most prolific players in school history. The Charlottesville, Va., native set the school record for career draw controls (156) and broke the program's single-season mark (57) that she established last season. A second-team all-conference selection in 2015, she also led W&M in points (41) and goals (35) as a senior.
An outstanding student, Shaffrey maintained an almost perfect cumulative grade point average while pursuing a degree in kinesiology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. The former Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award Finalist also garnered Capital One Academic All-District 3 At-Large First Team distinction this spring and is a two-time academic all-conference selection.
Shaffrey will attend medical school at the University of Virginia in the fall.
