The William & Mary men's swimming team split on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Old Dominion 175-113 and falling to No. 19 Duke, 164-108. The Tribe is now 5-1 on the season with just four dual meets left, and guaranteed of a non-losing season for a program-record sixth-straight year.
Leading the way for the Tribe was senior
Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.), who swept the backstroke events against both teams for four wins. He touched the wall in 49.33 seconds for the 100 back, then came back to win the 200 back in 1:49.06. Manion also led-off the 200 medley relay that defeated Old Dominion in 1:31.03, the seventh-fastest time in school history. That senior quartet also included
Jeremiah O'Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.),
Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.), and
Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.).
O'Donnell picked up two wins on the day, sweeping the 400 IM in 4:02.11. Freshman
Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.) also won twice against Old Dominion, winning the 500 free in 4:41.36 and the 1,000 free in 9:41.22. That longer race ranks him 13th all-time among W&M athletes. Single winners included senior
Andrew Nyce (Vienna, Va.) who downed ODU in the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.82.
Junior
Joe Eiden (White Plains, N.Y.) turned away the Monarches swimmers in the 50 free to the tune of 21.16 seconds, and sophomore
Kyle Neri (Wallingford, Conn.) continued his quietly impressive campaign with a win against ODU in the 100 free, stopping the clock in 46.36 seconds. The Tribe also got the best time of the day in the 400 free relay, as the team of Eiden,
Alex Montes de Oca (Orange, Va.), Neri, and Russell touched the wall in 3:04.30. Rounding out the notables was freshman
Maicoll Gomez (Richmond, Va.), who improved to 16th in school history in the 200 fly with his time of 1:53.12.
William & Mary has completed the dual-meet season for the fall, and will return to action in two weeks at the Bucknell Invitational, Nov. 20-22.
