Field Hockey Hosts Hofstra, Georgetown on Final Weekend

The William & Mary field hockey team brings its season to a close this weekend, hosting Hofstra at 6 p.m. on Friday and Georgetown Sunday at 1 p.m.

Pink Game on Friday
Friday's match is the "Breast Cancer Awareness Game," with fans encouraged to wear pink.  The team also has pink "One Tribe, One Fight" shirts for sale for $20.

Senior Day on Sunday
For Sunday's game against Georgetown, W&M will be celebrating two events.  First, before the match, the Tribe will honor the five members of its senior class.  Also, the entire match will be broadcast live on TribeAthletics.TV, the first-ever home broadcast of field hockey at W&M.  Long-time Tribe voice Wesley Kempton will be joined on the call by Peel Hawthorne '80, W&M's Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, and coach of the Tribe field hockey team for 26 years.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M is 6-11 overall and 1-4 in the CAA, falling to James Madison and beating VCU at home last weekend.  Senior Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) is having the best year of her career, and the best for W&M since 2004, with 11 goals and four assists, and sophomore Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) is enjoying a monster breakout campaign with eight goals so far.  In goal, senior Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) has a 2.71 GAA and 69 saves on a .600 save percentage.

Scouting the Pride
Hofstra is 13-4 on the year, and 3-1 in the CAA with a shot at the regular season title.  The Pride are one of the top scoring teams in the league, led by Claudia Marin Samper's 48 points (17g, 14a), as well as by Schoen sisters Stella (14g, 6a) and Simca (12g, 8a).  On defense, Carys Swan has played the vast majority of minutes in goal with a 2.29 GAA and a .670 save percentage, but Lauren Saltus has taken over the last three games and has a .667 save percentage and a 1.03 GAA.

Scouting the Hoyas
Georgetown is 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the Big East this year.  Aliyah Graves-Brown leads the team with five goals and an assist, while Helena Masiello has also found the back of the net five times.  In goal, Rachel Skonecki has been the team's only keeper with a 2.78 GAA and a 0.778 save percentage.

The Series
- W&M leads the all-time series against Hofstra, 9-6, though it is a much more even 4-4 in Williamsburg.  The Tribe has won the last three games, including a 2-1 double-overtime affair in Williamsburg two years ago.

- The Tribe is 3-1 all-time against Georgetown, but hasn't face the Hoyas since 2001.  All three of the meetings in Williamsburg have been W&M wins.

News and Notes
- Saunders scored two goals and an assist last week to rise further into the highest echelon of Tribe field hockey players.  She now ranks fifth all-time with 94 points, and she is eighth all-time with 36 goals.  Saunders also ranks second in school history with 22 assists, just three behind the record set last year.

- Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.) has four defensive saves this year, ranking her in the top-15 players in the nation.  She also ranks third in the CAA this season.

- The Tribe scored both of its goals against Towson on penalty strokes, bring the season total to four stroke goals on five attempts.  The four goals is tied for third all-time with the 1999 team, behind only the nine scored in 1995 and seven in 1993.  The five attempts are the fourth-most in school history, behind those three other teams.

- Junior Amanda McAteer (King of Prussia, Pa.) has scored two of her three penalty attempts, both numbers the fourth-most ever.  The school record in both categories is seven, by Saskia Bensdorp '98 in 1995.

- W&M was rated No. 28 in the first rating percentage index release, matching its best-ever rating in the RPI since the NCAA began keeping it for field hockey in 2006.

- This season saw the third time since 1993 that W&M has played two different teams with the same ranking within 10 days of each other.  The Tribe played No. 4 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 13, and No. 4 Virginia on Monday, Sept. 21.  The record for shortest seperation was three days in 1997, when W&M played No. 2 North Carolina and No. 2 Virginia.  The first time it happened was in 1994, with matches against No. 2 Northwestern and No. 2 Virginia coming a week apart.

- Lloyd's hat trick against Ohio was the first for W&M since the 2012 season opener, when Christine Johnson '13 scored four goals.  That performance earned her CAA Player of the Week honors.

- Saunders scored twice in just 15 seconds against Central Michigan.
