RICHMOND, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team scored in each half, and posted its second straight shutout as they blanked in-state rival VCU 2-0 in Richmond on Tuesday night. Sophomore
William Eskay and freshman
Ryder Bell tallied for the Green and Gold in the victory. With the win, the Tribe wins its third straight match and improves to 7-7-2, while VCU drops to 4-9-4.
VCU just missed the first goal of the match in the third minute. Dakota Barnathan interrupted a Tribe clearance and stole the ball. His chance had to be cleared off of the goalline by redshirt junior
Mac Phillips.
The Tribe started to mount its attack with a pair of shots in the seventh and the eighth minute. Senior
Jackson Eskay put a shot on frame that Garrett Cyprus had to save, before Bell had his chanced blocked by a VCU defender.
W&M jumped on the board first with a goal in the 12th minute. Redshirt sophomore
Alfonso Speed Jr. sent a feed to
Jackson Eskay that set him free on the right side of the 18-yard box and sent a feed to younger brother
William Eskay. The younger Eskay drove into the box and planted his shot into the middle of left of the goal.
The Rams had their second shot cleared of the goalline in the 26th minute. Jorge Herranz put a shot on frame that beat the goalie, but redshirt junior
Ryan Perry cleared the ball off the line and into safety. In the 33rd minute Herranz had another chance on a strong shot, but this time Phillips made the save.
W&M's first chance of the second half came in the 58th minute. Bell got free down the right side and was open in the box. He unleashed a shot that was just wide of the near post and out of play.
The Green and Gold just missed a chance to double its lead in the 73rd minute. Junior
Reilly Maw cleared some space from about 25-yards out and uncorked a shot that Cyprus leaped just in time, making the save.
W&M found its second goal in the 76th minute. Redshirt freshman
Geoffrey Young lofted a ball into the box that found freshman
Marcel Berry, who brought down a deflection right in front of the goalmouth. Berry flung the ball to Bell, who was wide open. Bell placed his shot into the empty net, giving the Tribe a 2-0 lead.
Despite the victory, VCU held a 14-13 advantage on shots, which included a 5-4 lead in shots on goal. Bell and
William Eskay each fired four shots, while
Jackson Eskay finished with three shots.
Phillips recorded four saves in goal as he recorded his third shutout of the season and his second in a row. Phillips and the rest of the Tribe defense haven't allowed a goal in more than 180 minutes.
William & Mary concludes the regular season as they host Delaware at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Day Field on Saturday, Oct. 31. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
