WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary field hockey program suffered a 6-2 setback to No. 19 James Madison on Friday night at Busch Field. Senior Pippin Saunders scored a pair of second-half goals for the Green and Gold, while sophomore Booter Ellis added two assists and a defensive save. The Dukes improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in CAA action, while the Tribe dropped to 5-11 and 1-4 in league play.

James Madison scored less than five minutes into the contest to take the early advantage. Melissa Wilken sent a hard shot on frame from the top of the circle that Taylor West redirected in at the 3:44 mark.

Just under 10 minutes later, West found the back of the cage for a second time, doubling the Duke lead. Hannah Hall drove down the right side and sent a cross into the penalty area. West got on the end of it, flipping a shot into the left netting for her 12th goal of the year at the 13:35 mark.

The Tribe responded with a pair of attempts on goal in the 16th and 17th minutes, but each time JMU goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler made the stop. Junior Amanda McAteer carried up the left side and swept shot that Kraeutler kicked away. Moments later McAteer played a cross toward the center of the area, and freshman Jenny McCann redirected it on frame only to have Kraeutler again make the stop.

Following another shot off a penalty corner for the Tribe, JMU started the break back the other direction that resulted its third goal of the night. After some Duke pressure, a deflected pass ended up on the stick of Kristen Reitano, who scored into an open goal from the left side. It was Reitano's first goal of the season.

Early in the second half, Ellis made her fourth defensive save on the season, before W&M had a couple of dangerous chances. Just over five minute into the frame, sophomore Cammie Lloyd had a break chance driving into the penalty area, but Kraeutler came off her line to make a diving save.

JMU tacked on a trio of second-half goals to push it lead to 6-0. Wilken sliced into the penalty area, around a diving Tribe goalkeeper and walked the ball into the goal in the 43rd minute. West redirected a hard pass from Hall into the right boards six minutes later to extend the margin to 5-0. Wilken closed out the JMU scoring with her second goal of the night in the 61st minute, firing a shot from the left side of the circle into the right corner of the cage.

Ellis found Saunders on nearly identical plays off penalty corners to get the Tribe a pair of late scores. In the 67th, Ellis sent a pass toward the left post and Saunders hammered it home for her 10th goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later, W&M used the same combination. Ellis again found Saunders at the post for her 11th marker of the campaign. It also marked Ellis' second assist of the season.

The Green and Gold continues its season long four-match homestand on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they welcome VCU to Busch Field for a 1 p.m. match. Next weekend the Tribe hosts Hofstra (Oct. 30), before playing host to Georgetown (Nov. 1). Match times are set for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
