The William & Mary field hockey brought Homecoming Weekend to a successful close on Sunday, scoring twice in the span of 90 seconds to complete a comeback win over VCU, 2-1. The Tribe improved to 6-11 on the year with the win, while the Rams fell to 5-11.
After a scoreless first half where W&M outshot VCU 12-2, action heated up in the second 35 minutes. The Rams scored first on a long breakaway, with freshman Emily McNamara picking off a pass and driving the offensive half to score at the start of the 46th minute. Ten minutes later, it was the Tribe's turn. Senior
Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) drove in along the baseline and slotted a pass out to
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) right in front, who then shot to the upper 90 at the far post. It was Lloyd's eighth goal of the season, and Saunders' 22nd career assist, placing her in second all-time at W&M.
Just under 90 seconds later, the Green and Gold struck again for a 2-1 lead. Off a penalty corner, senior
Peyton Smith (Richmond, Va.) took a hard shot that was saved by the VCU keeper and popped straight up in the air. Showing off the skills she uses in the spring as part of the W&M lacrosse team, sophomore
Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.) reached up and tapped the ball down towards the far post, where teammate
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) slapped it into goal. It was Menges' fourth goal of the season and her second game-winner, while MacLeod picked up her first career assist. For the game, the Tribe out-shot VCU 22-7, and took seven penalty corners to just two for the Rams. Senior
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) made three saves in goal.
William & Mary brings its season to a close next weekend with two final home games. The Tribe hosts Hofstra on Friday night, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m., before taking on Georgetown Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
