PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A pair of second half goals lifted the William & Mary women's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory at Drexel on Friday night. Junior
Clara Logsdon and sophomore
Sami Grasso scored the College's goals. With the win, the Tribe improved to 10-3-1, 4-1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Dragons fall to 7-8-0, 1-5-0 in league action.
The win also secured the Tribe's 35th consecutive winning season, which is an NCAA record. The 35 years account for every year in program history as well.
W&M opened the match on the offensive and fired the match's first shot in the fifth minute. Senior
Nicole Baxter found some space and uncorked a shot on target that was saved by Drexel goalkeeper Kelsie Fye.
After the first shot, the Tribe continued to control the play in the offensive half, and outshot the Dragons 8-2 in the first frame. The Green and Gold's only other shot on-goal in the period came off of the foot of senior
Leci Irvin, but again Fye made the save.
Of the two shots the Dragons mustered in the first half only one of them was on target. Senior goalkeeper
Caroline Casey was there for the stop in the 19th minute.
W&M took the lead on its first shot of the second half. Baxter sent a through ball into the box that set Logsdon free on a one-versus-one against the goalie. Logsdon's shot trickled off the keeper and was kicked into the back of the net by a Drexel defender. The own goal gave W&M a 1-0.
The Tribe just missed a chance to double its lead with a shot in the 60th minute. Grasso was set free into the right side of the box. With the keeper charging on her, Grasso sent her chance just high. The pressure continued to mount, and in the 73rd minute, sophomore
Elysse Branton put a shot on-target that was turned away.
Grasso made a great individual play to put the Tribe up 2-0 in the 80th minute. She broke through the Dragon defense and unleashed her shot into the top left corner of the goal. The marker was her fourth goal of the season.
W&M dominated the shot count by a total of 20-4, which also included a 9-1 advantage in shots on-goal. Moore led the Tribe with four shots, while Irvin and sophomore
Haley Kent had three shots apiece.
Casey and the Tribe defense recorded its third straight shutout in the match. The senior was troubled with only one shot on-goal for the night. She remains in third place all-time in saves, and is eight away from moving into second place. Casey, who recorded her seventh shutout of the year, is now tied for fourth all-time with 25 career shutouts. Her and the backline have held opponents scoreless for 300 straight minutes. It is the second time this season the W&M defense has strung together three consecutive shutouts.
The Green and Gold continue their five-match road trip on Sunday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Delaware. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. W&M also will continue their road trip next weekend when they head to Towson (Friday, Oct. 23) and James Madison (Sunday, Oct. 25).
