The William & Mary field hockey fell Friday night at Drexel, 1-0, on an unlucky bounce that no player in the world could have stopped. The Tribe moves to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Dragons improved to 5-8, 2-1 in league play.
W&M had a number of good chances in the match, putting seven of its 12 shots on-frame, but were unable to crack the goal. Neither was Drexel, until midway through the second half when a hard shot was saved by
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) and took a bad deflection, straight up more than 20 feet into the air, then fell back right in front of the cross-bar and bounced into the cage.
Savage totaled eight saves in the match, while on the other end of the field, senior
Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) led W&M with three shots.
Maria Jose Pastor (Burke, Va.) and sophomores
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) and
Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.) each had two more shots.
William & Mary is back in action on Sunday, playing at St. Joseph's at 12 p.m.
