WIDE RECEIVERS
First-year wide receivers coach Winston October leads one of the conference's most experienced groups this season, as all of its production returns from a season ago. Seniors Tre McBride and Sean Ballard lead the unit as the returning starters and have combined to total 182 receptions during the past two seasons, while junior Christian Reeves and sophomore Kevin Hart emerged as reliable targets last fall.
One of the nation's most dynamic playmakers, McBride (6-2, 205) earned All-America honors last season after totaling a team-high 63 receptions for 801 yards with five touchdowns. The first-team all-conference selection also led the squad with 1,533 all-purpose yards and ranked third in the league with 127.8 all-purpose yards per game en route to being selected as the 2013 CAA Special Teams Player of the Year. The McDonough, Ga., native possesses all the traits necessary to dominate at the FCS level, as he blends excellent size, speed, ball skills and balance with a competitive mentality and a good football IQ. Although he will undoubtedly continue to be the focal point of opposing defenses, he should once again be among the nation's best at his position.
Lining up opposite of McBride will be Ballard (6-0, 190), who established himself as one of the conference's top big-play threats last season. In addition to ranking third in the CAA with 16.5 yards per catch, he posted six 40+ yard receptions and finished the season with 36 grabs for 593 yards and three touchdowns. A dynamic athlete, the Plano, Texas native possesses a combination of speed, elusiveness, balance, toughness and ball skills that make him an excellent target. Entering his third season as a starter, Ballard's experience should contribute to increased productivity this fall and could make him a candidate for postseason honors.
Also expected to make significant contributions at wideout this season are Reeves and Hart. After transferring to W&M from Virginia Tech, Reeves averaged 13.0 yards per catch during his initial season with the College last fall. Standing 6-4, 215, Reeves is the Tribe's biggest wideout and has the potential to put up big numbers as evidenced by his 109-yard performance in the win against New Hampshire. Although his 2013 campaign was cut short due to an injury, he participated in spring practices and expects to be at full strength this fall.
Hart (6-0, 186) also has the ability to emerge as a big part of W&M's offense this season, as the sophomore has progressed nicely in his brief time at the College. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is a dependable, high-effort performer who has flashed tremendous potential in limited game reps. Evidence of his potential was on display in the season finale at Richmond last season when he recorded nine receptions for 82 yards in his first collegiate start.
Adding depth at the position will be sophomore Flynn Heald (5-11, 180) and redshirt freshman Daniel Kuzjak (6-2, 180). Heald is a mentally and physically tough player who knows his assignments and is a good route runner, while Kuzjak has good size and a natural ability to go up and get the ball. Heald was one of the offensive standouts during the 2014 spring game, as he totaled three catches for 65 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown grab.
