Haight, Walsh Honored in CAA Men's Cross Country

The William and Mary men's cross country team was well-represented on the Colonial Athletic Association All-Conference team announced Wednesday, winning two of three major awards to go with six All-CAA performers.  The 12-member all-conference team was identified last month at the CAA Championships, while the Runner of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year were voted on this week by the league's coaches.  An all-academic squad, one athlete from each school, was also chosen this week.

For the Tribe, freshman Mac Haight (Vienna, Va.) was chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year, after a seventh-place showing at the CAA Championships.  The top finishing rookie in the meet, Haight was also second for W&M overall.  He was fourth on the team at Wisconsin and at UVA, and was seventh for the Tribe at the Southeast Regional.  Haight is the eighth W&M freshman in a row to win Rookie of the Year honors, including teammates Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) in 2012 and Trevor Sleight (Asheville, N.C.) last fall.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Stephen Walsh was named the CAA Coach of the Year for the fifth year in a row, after leading W&M to its 15th-straight CAA title.  The Tribe's 15 wins in a row is the second-longest active winning streak in the nation, and the fifth-longest conference title streak all-time in the NCAA Division I.  The Green and Gold has now won 22 total CAA men's cross country titles, tied with the Tribe women's tennis team for the most by any program in conference history.  W&M has won 37 cross country titles in its history, third-most in NCAA history.

Sleight was named to the CAA All-Academic team, after leading the Tribe in each of the first four races of the year.  He won the Spider Alumni Open and the W&M Invitational, and was also the Green and Gold's top finisher at UVA and at Wisconsin.  At the CAA Championships, he earned a spot on the all-conference team for the second year in a row.
