The William and Mary field hockey team battled for the entire game but was unable to overcome Louisville, falling by a 4-1 score on the road. The Tribe is now 2-1 on the year, while the Cardinals improved to the same mark.
Box ScorePenalty corners keyed action in the first half, with the Cardinals jumping on the board first in the fourth minute. Less than two minutes later, senior
Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.) scored the equalizer in front of her hometown crowd. Off of another corner,
Navneet Singh (Auckland, N.Z.) and
Chaney Manganello (Richmond, Va.) combined to shoot the ball over to Hodge, who launched a rocket into the boards. She is the first Tribe player of the year to score two goals on the season in the Green and Gold's very balanced attack.
Play continued back and forth for the much of the rest of the half, before Louisville was able to capitalize on the attack early in the 24th minute. The bang-bang crossing play in front gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead that they took into the intermission. Coming back out in the second half, Louisville was able to score twice more in the first 12 minutes, and then locked down on defense to stymie three Tribe corners and four shots over the final 15 minutes of play.
Sophomore
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) made her first start in goal and played all but 12 minutes, making four saves while allowing two first-half scores
to take credit for the loss. Corners were a relatively even 6-5 in favor of the home team, but W&M held a 3-1 advantage in the second half.
William and Mary is back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m., playing against Ohio on Louisville's field.
