WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 29, 2013)—The No. 12 William and Mary men's gymnastics team placed second at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship at Kaplan Arena on Friday evening. Air Force claimed the Varsity Division team title with a 420.85 and was followed by W&M (419.1), Navy (404.6) and Springfield (401.85). Arizona State won the Collegiate Division team title with a 407.55 and was followed by Washington (358.8) and Brockport (320.55).
The individual all-around titles were also awarded on Friday evening, as W&M junior Daniel Potemski and freshman Keaton Ackerman placed first and second, respectively, in the Varsity Division. Potemski posted a winning score of 84.35, while Ackerman earned an 81.40 en route to helping the Tribe register its second-best team score of the season.
The Green and Gold opened the meet on floor and recorded a 69.70. Freshman Neal Courter posted the evening's top score in the event with a 14.6, while junior Landon Funiciello also advanced to tomorrow's individual event finals by placing tied for fourth with a 14.0.
Sophomore Jason Wang and Ackerman led the Tribe on pommel horse and advanced to the individual event finals with a 14.3 and a 14.2, respectively. As a team, W&M earned a 69.25 in the event.
Funiciello nearly matched his career high on rings and posted the evening's top score in the event with a 15.4, while Potemski also reached tomorrow's event finals with a 14.15. Both performances were instrumental in helping the Tribe record its second-best score of the season in the event (70.75).
W&M then moved to vault where it notched a 69.85. Courter led the Tribe with a 14.65 to tie for second, while Potemski's 14.4 also helped him advance to the event finals.
As he did on rings, Funiciello earned the top score on parallel bars with a 14.65 en route to helping the squad match its second-best mark of the season in the event (70.15). Potemski also came up big with a 14.3 to reach tomorrow's event finals.
The Tribe closed out the meet on high bar and tallied its second-best score of the season with a 69.4. Sophomore J.J. Jindra led the Green and Gold with a 14.1, while Potemski and Courter both posted a 13.95.
Tomorrow's individual event finals will begin at 2 p.m.
