The William and Mary volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at home Saturday night, beating Hampton 3-0 and winning the team title at the Colonial Challenge tournament. The Tribe improves to 8-5 on the year, while the Pirates fall to 7-9 overall.
Box Score
The Tribe was led by a number of standout performances, including from freshman
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.), who had a season-high 14 kills while hitting .500. Koleva also had four digs and a pair of blocks. Sophomore
Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) had 15 kills on a .462 attack, adding fives digs and two more blocks. Senior
Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) had seven kills while hitting .308, and also had a match-high four blocks.
W&M also had leading performances from sophomore
Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.), who dished out 24 assists and had five digs and two kills. Senior captain
Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) had 17 assists and six digs, and also scored a season-high three service aces. Junior
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had two more aces as well as seven digs, and redshirt-sophomore
Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) added in seven more digs.
Also of note, redshirt-freshman
Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) had four kills and a block in limited action, and redshirt-sophomore
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) scored three kills on four attacks while appearing in only one set.
The first set was the tightest of the three, with the lead passing back and forth until W&M was forced to call a timeout with Hampton up 21-20. Coming out of the timeout, Koleva scored a kill to tie the set and the Pirates responded in turn to regain the lead. Koleva answered right back, however, and W&M took the lead on a solo block by O'Connell. O'Connell and redshirt-sophomore
Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) blocked out Hampton on the next point as well, and Rivas snuck in a dagger at set-point to close the 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Tribe flew out on a 10-2 run early, and never let the Pirates get any closer than four the rest of the way to a 25-18 win. The third set saw more of the same with a 10-4 W&M lead early and another 9-3 run late, before Koleva's 14th kill capped off the 25-17 set victory.
Thanks to their strong performances over the weekend, three Tribe players were named to the All-Tournament team. Koleva was selected as the tournament MVP, averaging 2.89 kills and 3.22 points per set on a .321 attack. O'Connell was also named to the team, after she collected 11 blocks in the Tribe's 10 sets. Murray rounded out the honorees, ranking second among all players at the tournament with 3.69 points per set.
William and Mary heads back on the road next weekend to begin play in the Colonial Athletic Association, taking on UNCW Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
