Tribe Volleyball Falls to Georgetown, 3-1

The William and Mary volleyball team battled hard throughout the night, but was unable to come away with the win and fell to Georgetown, 3-1.  The Tribe, now 3-4 on the year, finished second at the Tribe Invitational while the Hoyas moved to 5-0 in capturing the tournament title.  Georgetown's Dani White was named the tournament MVP (complete all-tournament team at the bottom).

Box Score

Earning spots on the all-tournament team for the Tribe were senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) and redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.).  O'Connell had seven blocks and four kills in the match, and finished her weekend ranked second among all players with 1.33 blocks per set and third with a .348 attack.  Grand Pre, who recorded eight kills and 14 digs against the Hoyas, finished the weekend sixth in the tournament with 2.83 kills, 3.21 points, and 3.75 digs, and tied for fourth at 0.33 aces per set.

Other notables on the evening included sophomore Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.), who led the Tribe with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs, and added in three blocks on defense as well.  Classmate Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) had seven kills and four blocks, and freshman middle Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with four kills and five blocks, two of them solo efforts.

Junior Julia Swalchick (Melbourne, Fla.) had eight kills and three digs on the night, and sophomore setter Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) had 19 assists, six digs, and a pair of aces.  Her comrade at setter, captain Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.), dished out 22 more assists, and added in eight digs.  On defense, libero Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 13 digs and a bonus kill, and junior Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) chipped in 10 more digs.

After Georgetown came out and took the first set 25-19, W&M responded immediately in the second.  The Hoyas had pulled within a point early, at 8-7, but the Tribe reeled off a 10-3 run capped by a pair of kills from Brown to open up an 18-10 lead and force a timeout.  Georgetown is a good team and battled to try and climb back to within two points at 21-19, but that uphill struggle wore them out and they had no answer for the Tribe's closing 4-1 run that won the set 25-20.

The third set was another back-fourth battle, with the College holding the lead up until the very end when Georgetown was able to slip by for a 25-22 win.  In the fourth, the Tribe held a slim advantage through the mid-way point, getting a kill from Grand Pre to set the score at 16-14.  The visitors were able to muster a 6-0 run to take the lead, and held on for the 25-20 win.

William and Mary returns to the road next weekend, traveling north to New Hampshire for the Holly Young Invitational Sept. 7-8.  The Tribe will face Central Connecticut state on Friday afternoon, before facing Holy Cross on Saturday morning and the host New Hampshire in the tournament finale that night.
