The William and Mary volleyball team dropped a tough 3-0 match to UMBC Friday night on the first day of the Penn Invitational. The Tribe moves to 4-5 on the year, while the Retrievers improve to 10-4 overall.
Redshirt-freshman
Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the way for the Tribe in the match with her first double-double of the year, 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore libero
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had 21 digs and three assists, and junior
Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) scored seven kills and a match-high three blocks.
Also of note was the play of redshirt-freshman
Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.), who collected 14 digs. Freshman
Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) had 19 assists in two sets of action, and was spelled by junior
Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) who added seven assists, seven digs, and a service ace.
William and Mary is back in action tomorrow with two matches as the Penn Invitational continues. The day starts at 10 a.m. against Rhode Island, and then the Tribe will face Penn in the tournament's final match at 4 p.m.
