The William and Mary women's basketball team starts on its final road swing of the year Thursday, heading down to Norfolk to face Old Dominion at 7 p.m. The game falls on the 91st anniversary of the very first women's basketball game for W&M, against Westhampton (now Richmond) on Feb. 24, 1920.
Scouting the Tribe
William and Mary is coming off of a 76-66 win over Georgia State on Sunday and looking to build a strong push heading into the 2011 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championships March 10-13. The Tribe shot a school-record 95.7% from the free throw line against the Panthers, with Taysha Pye shooting 10-10 herself en route to a 20 point afternoon. Four more W&M players hit double-digits as well, with freshman Kaitlyn Mathieu nearing a double-double of 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior Katy Oblinger dished out four more assists, and currently ranks second in school history with a season ATO of 1.65.
Scouting the Monarchs
Old Dominion clinched a first-round bye in the CAA Tournament Sunday with a win over Hofstra to move to 18-8 overall, and 12-3 in conference play. Three Monarchs are averaging 11.7 ppg or better, led by Tia Lewis' 11.9 ppg, and she also leads ODU with 7.8 rpg. Jasmine Parker runs the point with 109 assists and 86 steals to go with her 11.8 ppg.
