Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary Tribe men's and women's swimming team
put together a fantastic meet this weekend at the Terrapin Invite, collectively
setting 38 personal-best swims and notching five top-10 performances at the
two-day meet. As part of its championship
season, several members of the Tribe
competed against swimmers from Virginia, UMBC, Drexel, Delaware, and Penn.
Freshman Sammie Cooper was the standout for the Tribe women,
totaling three podium finishes and etching her name on three top-10 lists with
her terrific swims. Cooper's best finish
came in the 100 butterfly finals, where she was runner-up with a personal-best
time of 56.79, ranking her seventh all-time in school history.
The Mt. Kisco, New York, native, also earned a pair of third
place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke finals. In the 100 back, Copper swam a lifetime-best
57.73, placing her sixth all-time at the College. In the 200, Cooper touched the wall in a time
of 2:04.50, ranking her fourth in school history in the event.
Senior Hope Sweetnam had a fantastic performance in the 200
freestyle finals, winning the event with a personal-best time of 1:54.81. Cooper and Sweetnam led a strong Tribe
women's performance at the meet, with seniors Haley Smith and Stevi Anderson
also achieving personal-best times at the meet.
Freshman Gabby Famularo did not set any personal-best times at the meet,
but had her best overall meet of the season.
On the men's side, freshman Nick Mason led the Tribe,
putting together a pair of outstanding performances in the 100 and 200
breaststroke events. In the 200 final,
Mason finished fourth with a personal-best time of 2:08.46, placing him 10th
all-time in school history. In the 100,
Mason finished third with a time of 59.48, just 0.04 seconds off the
personal-best mark he set in the prelims.
Freshman Nathaniel Holmes also had a great meet for the
Green and Gold. In the 200 butterfly
finals, Holmes placed fifth in a time of 1:53.35. In the prelims, however, Holmes qualified
with a personal-best time of 1:53.00, ranking him sixth all-time at the
College.
Also setting personal-best times at the Terrapin Invite for
the men were junior Michael Polo, and freshmen Quint Carr and John Rittenhouse.
The William and Mary Tribe men's and women's swimming and
diving teams have less than two weeks left until the CAA Championships get
underway in Fairfax, Virginia on the campus of George Mason University. The three-day meet begins on Thursday,
February 24.
