WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Nov. 12, 2011) - William and Mary All-American running back Jonathan Grimes totaled a school-record 331 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns, but the Tribe fell to 11th-ranked Old Dominion, 35-31, in front of a sold-out crowd for senior day on Saturday afternoon at Zable Stadium.

In a back-and-forth game that featured more than 1,000 yards of total offense (with W&M holding a narrow 503-500 advantage), the Monarchs (9-2, 6-2) scored the game-winning touchdown on a 7-yard run by Angus Harper with 2:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. W&M (4-6, 2-5) had two final possessions and drove into ODU territory on both, but each of the drives ended with interceptions.

Grimes totaled most of his yardage on the ground, as he rushed for a career-high 227 yards on a school-record 38 carries. The performance marked the second-consecutive week he eclipsed 200 rushing yards after piling up 208 yards last Saturday at Rhode Island. The Palmyra, N.J., native also broke his own single-season school record for all-purpose yards (2,223), while he moved up to fifth on W&M's single-season rushing list (1,226).

Making his second-consecutive start, sophomore quarterback Brent Caprio completed 20-of-28 passes for a career-high 245 yards with a touchdown, while senior wideout D.J. Mangas totaled a team-best six catches for 76 yards with a score.

Defensively, junior linebacker Dante Cook led the Tribe with nine tackles, while senior linebacker Jake Trantin posted seven stops and a tackle for a loss.

After stopping ODU on downs on the game's opening possession, W&M looked as if it would get on the scoreboard first when it marched deep into the Monarchs' territory. However, the Tribe came up empty when freshman wide receiver Tre McBride fumbled at the 1-yard line and ODU fell on the loose ball in the end zone.

Although the Monarchs went ahead, 7-0, on an 11-yard touchdown run by Harper late in the first quarter, W&M answered with an eight-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown run by Grimes.

The teams then traded touchdowns on their following possessions, as ODU scored on an 11-yard scamper by quarterback Taylor Heinicke and W&M found the end zone on a 5-yard run by Grimes.

Both teams had field goal opportunities late in the half, but ODU kicker Jarod Brown missed wide right on a 50-yard attempt and had a 57-yard try blocked, while W&M's Drake Kuhn had his 35-yard try blocked.

The teams continued to trade scores in the second half, as both squads found the end zone on each of their first two possessions. A 30-yard completion from Caprio to senior tight end Alex Gottlieb helped set up a 4-yard touchdown strike to Mangas for the first touchdown of the half, while a 27-yard completion from ODU wide receiver Antonio Vaughan to Reid Evans knotted the score at 21-21.

W&M reclaimed the lead, 28-21, on a 2-yard touchdown run by Grimes that capped off a 17-play, 80-yard drive that lasted 9:13. In addition to punching in the touchdown, Grimes had 10 carries and one catch on the drive and accounted for 67 of the yards.

The Monarchs answered the Tribe's long touchdown drive with a quick one, as it covered 58 yards in just 1:43 to tie the game on a 1-yard run by Harper.

Although W&M responded with a 31-yard field goal by Kuhn to go ahead 31-28 with 6:44 remaining, ODU put together its third-consecutive touchdown scoring drive on its ensuing possession. Harper's game-winning 7-yard touchdown, his third score of the day, punctuated a 10-play, 74-yard drive that gave the Monarchs a 35-31 lead with 2:48 left.

The Tribe quickly moved to ODU's 33-yard line on its following possession, but Caprio was intercepted by Eriq Lewis at the 23-yard line. After holding the Monarchs to a 3-and-out, W&M began its final drive at its own 41 with 1:23 remaining. The College marched to ODU's 37-yard line before Lewis intercepted Caprio again, this time at the 8-yard line with just 0:22 remaining. 

With ODU's victory, the Monarchs now lead the Optima Health Challenge, 40-20.

The Tribe will close out its season next Saturday when it plays at Richmond.
