Oakland, Calif. -
This week, the Tribe Lacrosse team is making its first trip to the state of California over the College's spring break. W&M is scheduled to play Cal in Berkeley on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time, before visiting St. Mary's in Moraga on Saturday at noon PST. During the week, members of the Tribe will contribute entries to a running blog on TribeAthletics.com.

Kristin Anderson - 8:00 a.m. (Pre-Team Breakfast/ Lax BALLIN')
As I glance down at my very petite but nonetheless working hand, I am frustrated that typing one-handed takes almost as long as it took the airport security workers to search our team. However, I'm thankful that the silver glitter spray paint finally washed off my hand (see Rees and Delaney's blog, which I knew was typed by Rees because of all of the dragged out words, such as "alooot").
Reflecting on what has been an incredible trip, I feel that my teammates and fellow bloggers have had a tremendous oversight. I must blame this on Kara, who obviously lied when she said that she would "blog it" (only the passengers of the cool maroon van would understand the importance of honesty). Therefore, I feel compelled to tell this story.
During the tailgate at Cal, we learned that "Men In Trees" is not just Annie Mac's favorite TV show. As we looked up in the towering trees behind the coliseum-esque Cal Berkeley stadium, a shimmering patch of blue tarp caught our eye. With a closer look, we realized that the movement coming from below the tarp was not that of a squirrel (or a chinchilla/ferret/dwarf guinea pig/Dalmatian), but of men. Yes, people were living up in the trees.
After engaging in a very fascinating conversation with the tree men, we learned that a group of about ten middle-aged adults had been living up in the trees since December 2 to protest the construction of a new athletic facility. Friends and strangers alike have brought them food and water (along with a few other ?substances' to sustain them). Kara even sent up cinnamon buns in the basket that they lowered down to us. They repeatedly encouraged us to climb up and join them, but I think we all can agree that we could never get as high as them (I must credit that pun to
Laura Lindsay). We wished the tree men the best of luck and quickly departed with the realization that no member of the Tribe Lacrosse team could overcome our ADD and just sit in a tree all day.
This morning, as I sadly glance at my packed bags sitting in Room 603 (not 503, which I was convinced was my room all week), I sip my $3.50 non-complimentary Calistoga water and remember that we have not only our St. Mary's game to look forward to, but also another fabulous hotel breakfast. I cannot wait to hear potential new developments of the ongoing Jerri/Jenny debate, and I am hoping that no more casualties occur due to Dolly and Wong's reckless CVS chapstick toss (poor Sellas). Dolly deserved to have a chapstick scar after she embarrassed Sara all dinner. No one can figure out her motive behind this unusual behavior.
I'll conclude this very concise blog with a few final statements: (1)
Lauren Coll and I are fighting because of the extremely flattering pictures she posted of me. (2) Caitlin, cows are not pigs. However, a male cow is in fact a bull. (3) Alcatraz no longer has prisoners but if they did, Annie would be their first inmate, even if just for the creepy California song she sang as we landed in San Fran.
Ok, enough's enough, time for the taste of croissants and victory. Signing off,
Kristin Anderson (sorry, Mary-I couldn't resist).

Katie Rees and Katie Delaney - 8:30 p.m. (After Scouting)
After practice this morning, we headed straight for the Golden Gate Bridge. On the ride over, stemming from Meg asking us where we would want to travel anywhere in the world, the freshmen decided we are going to see the seven man-made wonders of the world, starting with the Golden Gate Bridge. We also decided to travel abroad together one year. Pretty sweet. Once we reached the Golden Gate Bridge, we were amazed. The bridge was enormous! Mary (we don't judge you) asked, "why it was so famous?" Hehehe. We also got a verrry good soon-to-be-framed pic of the freshmen in front of the Bridge (part of documenting our seven wonders trips).
By then, we were starvinnng. As Sara put it, "First thing I said when I saw the Bridge, ?I'm HUNGRY!'" So we headed down to the wharf to catch a bite at any food place that caught our eye. Our group (Vit, Kat, Meg, Laura, Katie, Katie, Kristin, Mary, Abby, and Sara?a looot) chose the In and Out Burger ? 20 minutes isn't really in and out, but it was worth it. While eating, there was a magician outside (with a curly mustached), and we began to ponder ways that we could make money on the sidewalk. We decided that Delaney will do her amazing trick of fitting inside her sweatshirt as everyone else circles her and claps. After eating, most (Abby in particular) had an ice cream craving, so we headed towards the ice cream spots Abby scouted the last time we were at the wharf. On our way there, there were several silver men who dance to pretty awesome music, and if you pay them will let you get a picture with them. Kristin stepped up, paid a silver man, and she and I (Rees) got a picture with him. We started to walk away when he stopped us and kissed each of our hands ? we had silver left over for quite some time without noticing. Great experience.
After everyone got ice cream (YAY ABBY!) ? Side note: to those who thought I (Rees) would have been more involved in this ice cream process, I had a rather large milkshake at the In and Out Burger ? we loaded back into our vans to drive back to the hotel. Our van had the fortune of being entertained for most of the ride by the car next to us, in which a couple happened to be having a very animated argument. Our windows aren't tinted, so it was very lucky that they didn't happen to glance next to them to see 12 girls faces intensely staring at them, wondering what they could be possibly fighting about. Of course we all took the side of the girl (?You go girl'). Now back at the hotel we have to pack everything up again (HUGE piles in our rooms by the way). It should be a fun day tomorrow.

Kat Klopf ? 12 p.m. (Before Lunch)
So, I figure since I have been shouting "blog-it" about anything remotely interesting (and sometimes not) for the past few days I might as well add to the madness. Yesterday was AWESOME. The yacht came equipped with capin' and chef and was quite enjoyable. I loved being able to look in any direction and see something new (Golden Gate Bridge, the Giants' stadium ... etc) I also enjoyed all the true stories Anne's grandfather told me... like he was born on Alcatraz. Yeah right.
No worries for anyone though, Mary and I made sure to capture EVERY moment with our digital cameras so in fact we may even be able to make a flip book of the trip for anyone who missed it. Mary was so avid about her and I being the only ones allowed to take pictures that she dropped and slightly broke Katie D's camera ... ooops.
I also was able to join in on the sing-a-long on the front of the boat. Wong found it amusing to compare how Fitz and I freckle differently. However, it was much more amusing to compare my freckle tanning to Le Phong's "dirty" tan. I look like a car drove by in the mud and I got splattered, and Wong looks like she rolled around the dirt (which I can neither deny nor confirm.) Overall, yesterday was so incredible, but now its back to business and the reason we came out here, to win two games and show Cali what Tribe and East Coast lax is all about. Here we go Tribe! TRIBE PRIDE!!!
Lauren Coll - 10:35 a.m. (Before Pre-Game Lunch)
This morning I attained a sweet cut on my knee while on a brisk walk. Wong tripped me.
Kate Lawlor ? 10:30 a.m. (Before Pre-Game Lunch)
After breakfast we all hung out in our rooms for a little and then met in the lobby at 10 a.m. to have our "walk through." Instead of our walk through, Chris had planned a brisk walk to Bay Street to get us out of the hotel for a little. As we began walking, I quickly realized I had made a HUGE MISTAKE?.I forgot my sunglasses. I was ticked, but continued walking nonetheless. A few hundred yards into the brisk walk, Wong decided to stop walking and caught
Lauren Coll off guard. Lauren fell. I still can't believe someone fell on our WALK. She skinned her knee, but I think she'll be okay.
We reached Bay Street safely (after the fall of course) and Chris explained we had 30 minutes to shop around. I think Huether was the only one that bought something? most of us scoped out the shops for tonight when we'll make our big purchases. Huether consulted me this time on her purchase; I said it was reasonable. Twenty bucks for a pair of boots from Steve Madden?not bad. Dolly and Abby will most definitely return to Steve Madden tonight to buy a few pairs of their own. Wong wants boyfriend trousers from Gap, but she's afraid they look better on the models than they will on her?I guess we'll see.
Side note:
Lauren Coll just informed me that her knee is burning courtesy of Wong.
Clare and I caught Mark shopping around in Old Navy for jean shorts? but then we were confused because he said he wasn't in the mood for shorts. We didn't understand. John was on a mission to find March Madness games on TV since we don't get them in our hotel. The whole team ended up meeting in Gap at the end where Chris tried on two wonderful hats and Wong showed me a very cute one-piece bathing suit. Sellers made fun of me for being short when I couldn't hang up a purse. Delaney was bossing me around the whole time. We saw Kara's grandparents on the way back as well?so cute.
I'm currently watching Law and Order (that's my ringtone too). We're meeting at 12:15 to have a great buffet style lunch in the hotel. Shortly after that, we'll be on our way to Cal. Go Tribe.
Wednesday, March 14th
Kristen Wong ? 9:45 p.m. (Hotel Room)
The phone rings. I angrily open one eye. My bed is conveniently next to the phone. I suppose I should answer this. It's not a very friendly ring either, it's one of those annoying high-pitched hotel rings that seems to crawl into your ear and beat your eardrum with a battering ram. I throw up my arm onto the ridiculously tall beside stand, and grab the phone. "Hello?" I say. Recording sounds, "This is your 8:30 wake up call." Why did I even say hello. I knew that was coming? The next thought that comes to me in my hazy thoughts jolts me into wake mode. CROISSANTS AND OMELETS. Yes. Sad to say, but that is the only reason I woke up this morning. And probably why I will continue to get out of bed for the rest of the week.
Today was an awesomely fantastic day. The usual pre-game practice went smoothly, my unwanted sock tan is becoming more and more, uh, gross. Next we hurried back to the hotel to shower and dress to catch the tour boat. We arrived at the docks and filed out of our creepy unmarked paneled vans, and walked down Dock K. We boarded the amazing boat, and what's the first thing that we encountered? More food. And boy the spread on this yacht, I must say, rivaled the Woodfin Suites' breakfast. Not to take anything away from the lovely breakfast staff at the hotel, they were after all once my classmates. That's right, the omelet maker, our waitress and I share the same high school educations. Awesome.
The tour was great. After everyone ate and the feeding frenzy subsided, people broke up between the front deck, the back deck, and the inside with food and bar [For the parents]. I myself found my niche towards the latter end of the three-hour tour sipping Shirley temples on the front deck in the company of
Emily Vitrano and
Jamie Fitzgerald. It seems that someone should have had enough sense to cut us off, because after about the fifth grenadine and sprite we were feeling a little silly. We decided to only speak in the tune of the Gilligan's Island Theme song. More specifically only the first line, "A threeeeee hour tour." I can only hope Julia did not catch that on film. I can speak for the three of us when I say, I've decided to cut myself off of Shirley temples for a while after today's debauchery, and perhaps even check into rehab. Proud to say I've been clean for four hours.
We got back to the hotel and sprinted upstairs to change into sweats. Team dinner and meeting down in the conference room, both were delicious. And now, I currently must return to watching America's Top Model. I plan on going to bed early, and waking up once again for the sole purpose of stuffing my face in the morning. I love California. Oh, and Go Tribe. Beat Cal.
Jaime Sellers - 9:30 p.m. (Sitting in the hotel watching a TLC program about a steroid user's arms exploding?)
My first trip to San Francisco has been a memorable one so far, to say the least. From getting lost on the way to dinner in the city, to listening to Dora yell, "Oh hey, it's me, Michelle!!" (Character from Full House), to random pedestrians on the street and even hearing Kat imitate Finding Nemo characters, our team has definitely made it's presence known here in San Fran.
Last night's venture home definitely topped the charts as we were all overly tired and drained from the sun. I'm pretty sure we scared every other normal person on our trolley car back, as we were not holding back in our conversations. While the lovely Woodfin Suites hotel beds are no overpriced featherbeds, they sure felt pretty close last night.
Today's tour around the Bay was fantastic. The wind of course made every picture a guaranteed laugh, but I suppose that comes with the territory. The food on the boat was prepared by a chef and was nothing short of great. However, I'm sure none of you are surprised to hear that our team managed to form a longer line for the highly anticipated dessert trays. Considering San Francisco can be a normally foggy city, there was a pretty clear view of the Golden Gate today. Seeing Alcatraz was unreal, as we all threw around jokes about who on the team would most likely end up there if it were still in use.
Lauren Coll was the obvious answer here?to explain this nomination, Lauren has been having remarkably out of character dreams about hurting people in obscure ways. Clearly, after this recent batch of dreams, she would be the best candidate to vote ONTO the island known as Alcatraz.
Dinner and scouting was surprisingly eventful tonight at the hotel, as we all threw around jokes about who on our team would: win in a fight, be the first person to wuss out of a fight, be the first person to start a bench clearing fight, and even who can back up their arguments in the heat of the moment the best. Respectively, the nominations were: me, of course (did you really expect any different?), Rees and/or Hanny, Kara, and Kara.
Ashley Bolton and Emily Vitrano - 9 p.m. (After Scouting)
Ashley and I decided to provide a little background information before starting our blog. As our entire team/coaches/some parents know, Ashley and I bring companions with us to every away game and trip. To the dismay of our teammates, we often choose to provide voices for these companions. Ashley provides the voice of Mr. Lion, while I provide the voice of Eyore. I say to the dismay of our teammates because their voices are what you could call "baby voices." Lizzy especially does not enjoy us acting as our animal friends.
Well, California was a great place for Ashley and I, of all things in San Fran we wanted to see the sea lions. Luckily, dinner on Pier 39 put us right next to the largest group of sea lions we had ever seen. We decided to name them all Mr. Sea Lion (in honor of the original Mr. Lion). But, that was not the end of it. Today on our cruise around the bay (a three hour tour?) we passed a sea lion in the water, and groups of sea lions on the rocks of Treasure Island. Lauren took some good shots of the sea lions (when she was not taking pictures of me standing alone) so hopefully you'll get to see them on the website.
I mean, we did see some other cool stuff on the cruise, like the San Francisco skyline up close, Alcatraz, and the Giants' stadium, but I would say that the sea lions were the highlight, and talking like them?even better.
Caitlin deMello ? 1:15 p.m. (After Practice)
So, today is my first full day sans stitches and already the freshmen are writing a children's book about it- "Caitlin gets her stitches out in California". Pretty catchy title. I definitely had the best practice of the past two weeks today, Mark took the time out of his busy practice schedule (he's normally vigorously watching us practice) to play a game of pass and catch with yours truly. (I'd call him a laxer, but I don't know if, athletically at least, he's ready for that title?) Yesterday on the trolley, I was sitting next to him and we were going to get a picture taken of the two of us, but the picture didn't take, so Mark got lucky this time?
Yesterday, and last night we got to walk around San Francisco. (It was more like me sprinting on crutches out of complete happiness that I can walk again) Anyway, I was lucky enough to be in a group with Dolly, Mary, Sara, Abby, and Jaime. On our way to meet up with the Tribe, we got the biggest Trolley High that stayed with us for the next few hours- honestly the best Trolley High I have ever and will ever have. I don't think it would have been the same with any five other girls. (Plus I don't think anyone else would start singing the Full House theme song while hanging off the side (Dolly) and start yelling out "Uncle Joey, Uncle Jesse, Stephanie! Mary Kate, Ashley! DJ!" (Sara))
So far, I am able to walk again, I got to spend time with my favorite Tribe "Laxer", I felt a rush like absolutely no other that I couldn't have gotten with any other people, the breakfasts have been nothing short of incredible, and I saved a few lives with my crutches. And now we are getting ready for a cruise around San Francisco Bay. So, right now, I think that (needless to say) California has definitely lived up to our expectations, lady.
Meg Rafferty ? 9:45 a.m. (Before Practice)
Yesterday, we all arrived downstairs, squeaky clean in our best California-inspired outfits (see Anne in her wrap dress and motorcycle boots -- you never know who you may run into while in Cali, Anne could be the next undiscovered bovine) and took over the lobby at the delightful Woodfin Suites. We were all excited to see the city -- what exactly was located in the city only a select few knew -- but really, Tribe Lax was in California and ready to take the bull by the horns.
Looking around Vit and I noticed something, while the rest of us non-California natives were sporting skirts and short sleeves, Julia was wearing jeans and a jacket, while toting another in her bag. We piled into the three vans and headed over to the coveted MacArthur BART station. After waiting with maps in hand in eager anticipation -- most of us already regretting our clothing choices -- we finally went through the automated gates and headed, wide-eyed, for the Disney World-like tram; oh the joys of public transportation!
Lo! We arrived in the big city. In our matching green jackets we were a sight peppered with various comments:
"Oh are you hear to dance in the St. Patrick's Day Celebration?" a man asked Annie Mac and Katie Reese.
"What sport do you play?" another asked Vit.
"Lacrosse," She responded.
"Wow! That must be a rough sport!" he noted while looking her up and down -- meanwhile Vit had a real California experience ? walking up and down one of the many slopes of San Francisco.
We were set free in the city -- given three whole hours to soak in the California atmosphere:
We had the chance to shop -- H and M was a big winner (and yes they do have those on the east coast). We road the trolley -- some singing while hanging off the side (please when will you EVER have the chance to do THAT again), while others hung on for dear life (let's just say we know why most San Francisco natives are in great shape -- talk about a hilly city). We even received FREE Ghiradelli chocolate -- and ate it whether we actually LIKED the dark/caramel oozing chocolate or not.
We walked, we talked, we ate (a whole large pizza for one gang), and each group of gals (we broke off into tribes of four or so) developed some spectacular memories -- some you too can experience via Mark's fabulous photographic skills.
Finally we met back up as the Tribe on Pier 39, excited and ready to share how we each experienced and conquered San Fran in our own fabulous way.
Hoskins - 12:15 a.m. PST
Apparently, this has become a big hit within the Tribe Lacrosse family. I'm sure you're disappointed though to see only another entry by me. We got back to the hotel pretty late tonight, and everyone was exhausted from walking around San Francisco this afternoon. I received multiple verbal commitments for the morning from the girls, though, so hopefully we'll have some new posts by mid-afternoon East coast time. At dinner tonight at Fisherman's Wharf, the Martins, Williams' and Mrs. Wong all mentioned how much they loved reading this the past two days. Also got a great e-mail from
La Nolan ('06) tonight, who is also enjoying it and jealous she is not here. Now that I'm done with the name dropping, I'm happy to report the promised photos from today are finally online. Julia contributed the photos from dinner tonight, and I'll have
Lauren Coll's photos from the day up tomorrow.

Emily Vitrano ? 9:30 a.m. (Hotel)
The first night here in California was great. Katie Rees,
Caitlin deMello and I are roomates. I woke up an hour before the wake-up call though. Breakfast was very good in the hotel, they had a omlettes, eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, fruit, bagels, pretty much everything you can think of. Amazingly, someone who went to middle school with Wong was our server, and we think the guy making omlets also went to school with Wong. Right now, I'm getting taped and getting ready to head to Cal for practice today. I can't wait to walk around in San Francisco this afternoon. I came once in high school for three days, so that didn't really count.
Sara Beckstead ? 2:00 p.m. (After practice)
We just finished up practice a little while ago in the Berkeley stadium, which was unbelievable. We are now getting ready to go to downtown San Francisco. The weather is better than I could have ever expected and I hope it stays like this for the remainder of the trip! Side note: When leaving Berkeley we got lost because of Meg H.
Lizzy Bayly - 2:10 p.m. (After practice)
California is a lot cooler than I thought it would be (considering we're in Julia's hometown). The weather today for practice was really nice and for once it wasn't raining. I have had a lot of responsibility as the navigator. I got us here from the airport last night and if it weren't for [assistant coach] Meg [Huether], we would have been back to the hotel from practice in record time. We're leaving in a little while to head out to downtown San Fran. I really hope I don't have to hang out with Julia.
Mark Hoskins - 2:15 p.m.
In all fairness to Meg, it was kind of a joint effort on getting lost after practice. Although, it worked out really well because we did get kind of inadvertent tour of Berkeley. During practice, I climbed to the top of the football stadium to take some pictures, and the view was indescribable. You could see the tops of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance, just above a heavy layer of fog. There were a bunch of sailboats about in the bay, as the weather here couldn't be better. From everyone we've talked to so far today, they say it usually isn't this warm this time of year. Supposed to be a little cooler the rest of the week, but a little cooler means upper 60's and low 70's! I'm hoping to get some of Lauren's photos, and mine from the top of the stadium, online tonight. We're out the door to San Fran right now!
Monday, March 12th
Julia Martin ? 2:00 p.m. (Newport News Airport)
In response to the many teammates re-screened by security I say:
Dear Newport News TSA workers,
Have a heart.
Thank you, Tribe Lacrosse.
As I spilled soup on myself, I knew that my excitement has reached its height to return home to the Golden State. It is a sweet moment to see 24 girls in matching sweat suits scrambling to get their body-bag size travel bags under 50 pounds. A tough feat I know, but as shoes, underwear and goalie equipment was passed, I knew this trip was going to be special.
Among the many things to pack there was the problem of where everyone's pets were to be taken care of. Who knew that a team could have such a wide variety. We have four fish, three dogs, one chinchilla, one guinea pig, one dwarf hamster, one albino ferret and one cat, actually two (
Kat Klopf).
Anything called the immobilizer should be the name of a monster truck, but alas it is what
Caitlin deMello has to wear until her stitches are removed this week. Now as I look over and see [head coach] Chris [Halfpenny] struggling with her new phone it is clear to see she still doesn't know how to use it. Although technology is not her thing, the trip she has planned for us in California is going to be great. Wong on the other hand has both Ipod headphones stuck into her ears, and her fingers are running as fast as her feet on the field as text message number 34 is sent.
Holy fruit bag. To the inventor of the Tide To-Go Stick you continually make me and many others look good. Vit prepared herself this morning by going on a light jog, while Annie "MacTruck" McComber showered and blow-dried and curled her hair. Her red mop never looked so good.
Overall I am very glad to be going home, and Moo (
Anne Harrington) can't wait to go to the pastures of the State of Happy Cows: California. Go Tribe!
Anne Harrington ? 9:30 p.m. EST (On the flight to San Francisco)
As we approach the fifth hour of our plane ride it seems only appropriate for me, Moo, to say that a tiny bag of mini pretzels and a couple of Biscoff wafers is not enough to hold me over and in fact has left me feeling even hungrier than before?perhaps I should have packed a Moo Moo Mr. Cow (from Moe's) to-go.
Mark Hoskins, Sports Information (11:30 p.m. PST, At the Hotel)
I was fortunate enough to make the cut for this trip with the lacrosse team. I'm putting this blog together after getting Coach Halfpenny's approval, though I must say I'm borrowing the idea from another school's web site. I also debated whether or not to contribute anything, but figured I could give another perspective and provide some more of the trip details. I'm excited about the trip because this is the first time I've been to California. John Knaul, the team's head athletic trainer, is probably more excited though that I'm here, since he now isn't the only guy on the trip with 27 women.
We made it to our hotel a little bit after 10 p.m. Pacific Time and have settled in for the first night. Watching the enthusiasm and "socializing" sag as the flight from Atlanta wore on, it's safe to say everyone was ready to be here. Although, just about everybody took part in a spirited crossword puzzle effort during the flight. I think it was
Laura Lindsay who brought the puzzle book, and probably 10 different people were working on a crossword puzzle at one point. The hotel is extremely nice,
here is a link to its web site. One of the first things we noticed, though, is we are literally less than 60 yards away from the Emeryville Train Station. Although, only one train has come through tonight so far, and I believe the train will be our main transportation for the week, in terms of getting into San Francisco.
John and I turned on the local news when we got to the room, and the top story was how the California transit authority would be beginning a major construction project on the Bay Bridge, reinforcing it to withstand future earthquakes. There was also calming stock footage of the big quake back in '89 that left most of the bridge in broken sections. This was all not more than 30 minutes after we crossed the very same bridge, which is comforting to know now. That footage also brought back memories of watching Jose Canseco carry his wife/girlfriend across the field in a hysterical, no pun intended, state.
I couldn't make out too many landmarks during the ride out to the hotel, but saw signs for a lot of the things I associate San Francisco with, including Candlestick Park where the 49ers play, or whatever the stadium is called this year. Really looking forward to seeing both Oakland and San Fran tomorrow in daylight.
Not much else to report tonight, it's been a long day of traveling. The girls practice tomorrow at Cal, and I'm also excited to get a chance to see its campus, and then we will be touring San Francisco during the afternoon. I have one of our department's cameras out here with me, and I'm hoping to get some pictures of the trip up occasionally during the week.
Lauren Coll will also be putting her excellent photography skills to work for our web site this week as well. To the parents, alumni and fans of Tribe Lacrosse, hopefully we can bring you some entertaining stories this week on here, and I hope you enjoy reading this. Go Tribe!
