WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - With the William and Mary women's basketball team trailing by two points and time winding down, freshman Robyn Barton hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 2.6 seconds remaining to lift the Tribe to a 47-46 triumph against George Mason on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. The win was particularly impressive, as the College (10-4, 2-1) utilized a 23-2 run to overcome a 20-point second half deficit.
W&M has now won six consecutive games and is off to its best start since the 1993-94 season. The six-game winning streak is the program's longest since the 1980-81 season.
Junior
Devin James led the Green and Gold with a game-high 13 points, while classmate
Kyra Kaylor provided eight points and nine rebounds. With the solid performance, Kaylor now has 1,139 points and 704 rebounds during her career, becoming just the third player in school history to post 1,000 points and 700 boards.
En route to earning the thrilling comeback victory, the Tribe limited the Patriots to just 27.3 percent shooting in the second half, while outscoring Mason, 34-18.
Both teams struggled offensively early in the contest, as the score was knotted at three at the first media timeout. While the Tribe trailed by just one, 10-9, with 11:20 showing, George Mason rattled off a 13-0 run during a six-minute span to take a 23-9 lead.
W&M narrowed the margin to 10 points, 23-13, following a three-pointer by senior
Sarah Stroh with 3:22 left in the opening stanza, but the Patriots countered with five unanswered points to take a 28-13 lead into the locker room.
Following the intermission, Mason began the second half with a 5-0 spurt, forcing the Tribe to use a timeout at the 15:46 mark. While the Patriots extended the advantage to 20 points, 35-15, the Green and Gold refused to go away quietly.
The Tribe implemented a full-court trapping defense and exploded on a 23-2 run during the next nine minutes to claim a 38-37 lead with 6:21 to play. During the run, Kaylor provided eight points while James scored seven.
W&M pulled ahead by as many as three points on two occasions and led 44-41 after a layin by James with 2:28 left on the clock. Following three consecutive turnovers, the Tribe found itself trailing by one, 45-44, with George Mason's Jessica Smith at the free throw line. Smith made her first attempt but missed her second, as James corralled the rebound. Moments later, Kaylor found Barton open on the left wing for the game-winning shot. Mason's Lateisha Wade had one final shot from near mid-court at the buzzer, but the attempt was off the mark.
Barton's three-pointer was her only shot of the night.
The win marks the fifth time this season that W&M has limited the opposition to less than 50 points. Additionally, it is the third time in four games that the College has accomplished the feat.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts UNC Wilmington on Thursday at 7 p.m.
