HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — William & Mary women's basketball put together another stifling defensive performance in its 55-37 win over Hofstra on Monday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex to cap off a perfect road trip.
William & Mary (10-8, 3-4 CAA) opened the first quarter with a strong defensive presence, forcing seven turnovers and capitalizing on transition plays.
Alexa Mikeska contributed significantly, hitting a 3-pointer and assisting on key baskets. Geddes extended the lead with a 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup in the final minute, helping the Tribe end the quarter ahead 15-6.
In the second quarter, W&M saw
Natalie Fox convert a layup at 6:34, keeping the team ahead despite turnovers.
Jana Sallman's jumper, assisted by Mikeska at 1:38, helped to solidify the Tribe's advantage. Despite a modest scoring period, the Tribe led 24-16 at the end of the quarter, as the Pride (3-16, 1-7) managed to close the gap slightly with its own efforts.
The Green and Gold seized control in the third quarter with a decisive 14-point surge in the paint, opening with a key steal by Fox that set the tone. Mikeska was instrumental, contributing a crucial assist and a fast-break layup at 7:14. Geddes added to the momentum with consistent scoring, including a fast-break layup at the 51-second mark. This was Geddes' second straight game scoring 20 or more points.
Despite some missed opportunities, the team maintained pressure defensively, allowing only 10 points from Hofstra. The quarter concluded with the Tribe leading 43-26.
W&M maintained their lead in the final quarter with a strong performance, highlighted by Geddes' critical 3-pointer at 5:03, extending their advantage.
Monet Dance contributed with a layup early in the quarter, while Mikeska added two free throws to keep the momentum in their favor. Sallman's defensive efforts, including a timely rebound and steal, helped suppress the Pride's scoring attempts.
Despite Hofstra's Sandra Magolico adding to the scoreline, the Tribe closed the game with a 12–11 advantage in the quarter, holding the Pride without a field goal over the final 2:38.
