Mimi Smith

Mimi Smith spent one season on the Tribe staff during the 2024-25 season.
 
Smith was an standout player at Old Dominion, highlighted by becoming the second African American to win the Honda Broderick Award for Field Hockey in 1999. She was a two-time All-American, including earning first team honors as a senior in 1998 while helping the Monarchs to the NCAA Championship. Smith helped ODU to two national title games and three CAA Championships. She was named the CAA Rookie of the Year in 1995 and the defender of the year in 1998. Smith was inducted to the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and was named to the CAA 25th Anniversary Team.
 
Smith was a fixture on the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team roster from 1999 to 2004. She represented the United States at the World Cup Tournament, the Pan American Games, and the 4 Nations Tournament. She has played with the U.S. master’s indoor team in 2017 and the U.S. master’s team in 2018. She won a silver medal at the Pan American Games in 1999 and was also a member of the U.S. team that won the 4 Nations Tournament in Canada in June of 1999.
 
Most recently, Smith was the head coach at Garrison Forest School in Baltimore. She led the program to back-to-back Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Championships in 2022 and 2023 and a 27-4-1 record over the last two years. Smith was named the Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro co-Coach of the Year in 2023.
 
Smith was the director and owner of Reach Field Hockey Club from 2012-21. In addition to her work with Reach, Smith served as a director of the Black Field Hockey Network. She has volunteered with the NFHCA and was the first Black Coaches Council representative to sit on the NFHCA Board of Directors.
 
Off the field, Smith worked for Acadia Healthcare. She earned her bachelor’s degree from ODU in psychology and owns two master’s degrees in marriage and family therapy and counseling and sports psychology from Capella University.
