After five outstanding years on the recruiting trails and helping to
develop the William and Mary frontcourt into one of the top units in the
Colonial Athletic Association, Meg Barber was promoted to the post of
Associate Head Coach in the summer of 2010. Now in her sixth year at the College, Barber has been
instrumental in landing some of the most talented recruiting classes in
Tribe history, including all-rookie honorees Taysha Pye (2009), Emily
Correal (2010), and Kaitlyn Mathieu (2010).
In addition to recruiting, Barber’s responsibilities include post
development, opponent scouting, scheduling, assisting with conditioning,
and practice planning. She is also the program’s liason to compliance
and the director of the William and Mary Basketball Camp.
In 2010-11, Kaitlyn Mathieu was named
to the All-CAA Rookie Team, the third-straight season a Tribe player earned the
honor. Mathieu was a force almost
immediately for the College, earning a spot on the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic
All-Tournament Team after posting season highs of 19 points against both
Bradley and Buffalo. Mathieu, who
finished the season averaging 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game, was twice
named CAA Rookie of the Week. After her
great season, Mathieu now finds her name in 13 top-10 freshman lists.
Under her coaching, Tiffany Benson '10 improved from a gifted
defender coming out of high school into the CAA's all-time leading
shot-blocker, and the league's 2009 Defender of the Year. Benson
finished her career with more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, one
of just 14 players in the 25 years of the CAA (for either women or men)
to accomplish that feat. Emily Correal earned all-rookie honors in
2009-10 after averaging 6.7 rebounds per game, ninth-most in the league.
Her 202 total rebounds were the second-most ever by a freshman at
W&M.
In Barber's six years, the Tribe as a team has posted four of the
top five rebounding seasons in school history, the top three seasons in
total defensive rebounds, and the top two seasons in total offensive
rebounds. Barber's players have helped put 91 new entries on W&M's
rebounding lists since 2005-06.
Prior to joining the Tribe staff, she spent three seasons at Utica
College in New York as an assistant coach. At Utica, Barber was
responsible for film breakdown, scouting, team defense, as well as
coordinating recruiting visits. Additionally, Barber monitored Pioneer
student-athletes in their academic progress, while assisting in game
scheduling. She was also responsible for a variety of communications
activities and was the co-director for the Utica College Girls
Basketball Camp from 2002 to 2004.
Barber enjoyed a standout career at New York University, where she
graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. A
four-year member of the Violets women’s basketball squad, she helped
lead the team to NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 1999 and 2001, as well
as two ECAC Metro Championships. She was named the ECAC Metro Most
Outstanding Player in the 2000 and 2002 seasons. Barber played in every
game during her four-year career, starting in all but two of those
games. She is ranked seventh on the Violets’ career scoring list with
1,228 points.
A native of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and a fan of the New York Giants
and New York Mets, Barber resides in Williamsburg. In her spare time she
enjoys reading, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.
She has two sisters, Kim and Anne, and is the daughter of Bud and Ellen
Barber. She is the proud and loving aunt of her delightful nephew
Connor and niece Julia.
