Stephen Trefethen joined the Tribe volleyball staff prior to the 2021 season as a volunteer assistant coach. He assists primarily with pin hitters and liberos.
Known to the team as "Prof", Trefethen is a full-time mathematics professor at William & Mary, a position he has held since 2016. A volleyball fanatic, he has played the sport for 10 years and participated in NAGVA and USAV tournaments located all over the country.
Trefethen was honored as a recipient of the William & Mary Values in Action Award in June 2023, which is awarded to a nominee who epitomizes the college's values of belonging, curiosity, excellence, flourishing, integrity, respect and service. Trefethen studied as an undergrad and earned his master's at SUNY Potsdam in 2011, and later received his doctorate from the University of Arizona in May 2016.
