William & Mary head volleyball coach Ryan Adams announced the addition of assistant coach Kayla Carrell to the staff in May 2025.

Carrell comes to the Tribe after a decorated five-year playing career in volleyball and beach volleyball at UT Martin. She will work primarily with the defensive specialists and liberos while assisting in all day-to-day operations of the program.

“Throughout the interview process, Kayla’s knowledge and passion for the sport stood out,” Adams said. “Her dedication to growth and the process of learning showed how much value she’ll bring to the players and the program. Her hard work and dedication will make an immediate impact both on and off the court. I’m excited to welcome her to the Tribe volleyball family!”

Carrell was a standout in beach volleyball at UT Martin from 2020-24, graduating as the program’s all-time leader in individual victories (84) and individual winning percentage (.736), as well as individual wins (40) from the No. 5 position. She was the third player in program history to earn All-Ohio Valley Conference honors three separate times.

As a fifth-year senior in 2024, Carrell collected a team-high 23 victories, including a 21-7 record at the No. 5 position, the single-season program record for that slot. She was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association Top Flight Award winner, one of 53 pairs in the nation to receive such honors.

Carrell was part of an unprecedented run of success for the UT Martin beach volleyball program, helping lead the Skyhawks to its first ever OVC Tournament championship in 2022 and 2023. During the last three years of her playing career, UTM went 60-35 overall and 25-3 in OVC play.

As a freshman in 2022, Carrell was named the OVC All-Tournament Most Valuable Pair, alongside her partner Addison Conley. The duo went 24-1, earning AVCA Top Flight Award honors.

On the hardwood, Carrell had a five-year career from 2019-23. She played in 132 matches and racked up over 1,000 digs, becoming the 13th player in program history to reach the plateau. In 2023, as the team’s starting libero, she averaged 4.24 digs per set which ranked top-100 in Division I.

A native of Pensacola, Florida, Carrell graduated from UT Martin in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance and a minor in psychology. She spent the 2024-25 season as a graduate assistant with the Skyhawks where she earned a master’s degree in counseling.
