Richard Whitmore

Richard “Whit” Whitmore joined the William & Mary Athletics Department in April of 2024.  He will serve as the Deputy Athletics Director with special focus on capital projects and facilities, sport administration and oversight of certain sports.

Whitmore has more than 30 years of experience in collegiate athletics and came to W&M from Dartmouth College, where he spent the previous 16 years, most recently serving as Deputy Athletics Director. He supervised the administration for many of the Dartmouth’s 35 varsity sports over in his career, including most recently the Ivy League champion football team, as well as baseball, and men's and women's golf.  In addition to serving as a member of the executive management team, he oversaw the athletic and recreational facilities portfolio including all capital planning, design, and construction, in addition to operations and event management.

Prior to Dartmouth, he spent nine years at Wesleyan University as an Associate Director of Athletics. Whitmore also coached college basketball and baseball at Kenyon College and Daniel Webster College during his career. He is a 1990 graduate of Brown University and was a two-sport lettered athlete for the Bears in basketball and golf.

He lives in Williamsburg with his wife Kathleen and daughters, Allison and Melissa.
