Dane Sparrow enters his fourth season on the William & Mary women’s basketball coaching staff, and first after being promoted to associate head coach on May 22, 2025, in 2025-26.
Sparrow and the rest of the staff aided the Tribe to an historic season in 2024-25, culminating in the school's first CAA title and first trip to the NCAA Tournament, ending the school's drought as the only original DI member to have never made the NCAA Tournament in men's or women's basketball. The Tribe made more history beating High Point in the NCAA First Four in Austin, Texas for the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win. W&M also set records for most field goals and assists in a single season and forced its most turnovers since 2010 with Sparrow's help on the bench.
He also played a role in the development of Bella Nascimento, who was named the CAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was also an All-CAA Second Team Selection in 2024-25 while leading the league in scoring during conference play.
Sparrow's second year with the Tribe resulted in a 12-6 CAA record for the second consecutive season, tying the program record for league wins. With Sparrow's help on the bench W&M got off to their best start in program history through 11 CAA games, posting an 8-3 mark. He and the rest of Erin Dickerson Davis' staff became the fastest to 20 conference wins in program history (29 games) and the fastest to 30 overall wins since 1929 (53 games).
Sparrow's work with the team's post players led to a All-CAA first team selection for Nylah Young. The grad student finished second in the CAA in scoring at 16.1 points per game, with 11 performances of 20-plus points. Young also led the Tribe on the glass in 2023-24.
In his first season on the sidelines, he helped the Green and Gold to 18 wins, including 12 CAA victories, which matched the program record.
Sparrow joined the Tribe after seven successful seasons at Wake Forest, where he served multiple roles – assistant coach (2016-22), director of basketball operations (2014-16) and video coordinator (2013).
Highlighting Sparrow’s tenure in Winston-Salem was a trip to the 2021 NCAA Tournament, as he helped lead the ninth-seeded Demon Deacons to the program’s first tournament bid in 31 years. Wake Forest returned to the postseason again in his last season with an NIT appearance.
In addition to the team’s success, Sparrow was instrumental in the development of numerous players, which included four All-ACC standouts.
Among those who benefited from Sparrow’s tutelage were Ivan Raca and Jewel Spear. Wake Forest’s all-time leading scorer (1,482) and an All-ACC standout, Raca was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2021 WNBA Draft. Spear led the ACC in scoring last season (18.3) en route to earning first-team all-conference honors. One of the country’s top long-range shooters, she ranked second in the ACC in 3-pointers made (90), which ranked second on Wake Forest’s single-season list.
Wake Forest student-athletes also excelled in the classroom during his tenure, as four standouts garnered Academic All-ACC Team distinction.
Prior to his time with the Demon Deacons, Sparrow began his professional career as the video coordinator at UNCG in 2011-12.
Sparrow played collegiate basketball at Lander University, in Greenwood, South Carolina. A four-year starter, Sparrow played in 111 games for the Bearcats and finished with the fourth-most three-pointers made in school history with 197. Sparrow was named the team’s MVP in 2009-10 after averaging 10.9 points per game, shooting better than 41 percent from beyond the arc.
After his career at Lander, Sparrow transferred to UNCG to finish his degree, graduating in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
