Former SEC champion, two-time Finnish National Champion, and two-time NCAA All American, Tommy Barrineau joined the William & Mary's Track & Field staff in the fall of 2017, leading the Tribe's jumpers and multi-athletes.

During his tenure, Barrineau has coached nine CAA champions and four NCAA first round qualifiers. His athletes have broken 14 school records, accounted for 26 CAA podium finishes and secured 96 All-CAA performances.

Barrineau came to the Tribe after spending five years as a volunteer assistant at Duke, under now Head Coach Shawn Wilbourn. While in Durham, he helped build the Duke track and field teams, coaching three ACC decathlon champions and two ACC men's indoor heptathlon winners. As an athlete himself, Barrineau competed in the decathlon and heptathlon for 11 years, including eight years on the Finnish National Team. He represented Finland at the 2011 World University Games, placing 10th in the decathlon. In 2014, he won the Finnish national title in the decathlon, and in 2015, won the national title indoors in the heptathlon while also finishing eighth in the pole vault.  Barrineau competed in 52 combined-event meets over his career his best decathlon score was 7,762 points, set in 2015.
Barrineau competed as a collegiate at the University of Georgia under legendary coach Petros Kyprianou, winning Georgia's first-ever SEC title in the heptathlon in 2010 with his personal best score of 5700 points, earning him a spot at the NCAA Indoor National Championship meet. He improved Georgia's school record in the heptathlon by nearly 800 points and held the record for almost his entire career. Barrineau's collegiate best in the decathlon was 7,654 points at the 2011 SEC Championships qualifying him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships that year. He was twice named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and won the team Leadership award in 2010. In high school, Barrineau was a standout sprinter at Robinson Secondary High School in Virginia, running the 400m, 500m and 800m while also competing in high jump and Cross Country. His 4x800m team won an indoor state title in 2006 and were fourth at Nike Indoor Nationals in 2005.

A 2012 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in health promotion and behavior, Barrineau is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification. Fluent in Finnish, Barrineau now resides in Williamsburg with his wife, VCU assistant volleyball coach Janelle, and daughter Micah.
