Steve Belanger joined the William & Mary track & field program in August 2023 as an assistant coach working primarily with the Tribe's sprinters and hurdlers.
During his first three seasons in Williamsburg, Belanger's athletes have rewritten the William & Mary record books, establishing 18 school records across the indoor and outdoor seasons. His athletes have also earned eight All-CAA honors with top-three finishes at the conference championships and produced three USATF U20 Championships qualifiers.
The Tribe's record-setting performances under Belanger include new women's indoor marks in the 60m, 200m, 300m and 400m and men's indoor records in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, 300m, 400m, 500m and 4x400m relay. Outdoors, his athletes have established women's records in the 100m, 200m, 400m hurdles and long jump, along with men's records in the 400m and 4x400m relay.
The 2025-26 season featured several standout performances from Belanger's athletes. Freshman Finn Middleton set the William & Mary indoor record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.94 at the Penn State National Open and later posted a 14.02 in the outdoor 110m hurdles at the CAA Championships, the second-fastest performance in program history.
Freshman Kennedy Reynolds enjoyed a record-breaking outdoor campaign in the 400m hurdles. Reynolds clocked a school-record 59.26 at the Duke Twilight, becoming the first woman in program history to break one minute in the event. She earned Co-CAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors following the performance and went on to finish second at the CAA Outdoor Championships in 59.49 to earn All-CAA honors.
Belanger has also helped three Tribe athletes qualify for the USATF U20 Championships during his tenure, with Reynolds and Middleton qualifying in 2026 and Glidden qualifying in the 400m hurdles.
Belanger came to Williamsburg after spending four years as the head coach at Concordia University Chicago. His program produced three NCAA Division III national champions and two national runners-up. In total, 13 of Belanger's student-athletes earned NCAA All-America honors and 17 were named USTFCCCA Academic All-Americans. Under his tutelage, Cougar student-athletes achieved four USA Track & Field Championships qualifications, 41 top-10 national performances, 25 conference championships, four student-athlete of the year honors, 40 school records and 14 all-time conference records.
Along with his work on the track, Belanger started team-wide diversity and inclusion initiatives, led new branding and marketing initiatives for cross country and track & field, developed and expanded alumni relations and initiated team community service efforts and volunteer events.
Prior to Concordia Chicago, Belanger spent nine years at the Division I level with Boston College in 2019 and Quinnipiac from 2011-19.
At Boston College, he coached the sprinting, jumping, hurdling and throwing events. In his lone season in Chestnut Hill, he coached an NCAA qualifier and two All-ACC selections.
During his eight-year tenure at Quinnipiac, Belanger coached the sprinting, jumping, hurdling and throwing events. He also served as the program's recruiting coordinator and oversaw strength training efforts for both the track & field and cross country programs.
Belanger and the Quinnipiac coaches were named the 2015 MAAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The Bobcats finished as MAAC runners-up in 2015, 2016 and 2018 after previously having a program-best finish of seventh. Quinnipiac also received eight team academic honors during his tenure.
Over Belanger's eight seasons at Quinnipiac, the program produced five NCAA Division I East Preliminary qualifiers, including the first national-qualifying sprinter, hurdler and jumper in school history. His athletes earned three conference championship track athlete of the year awards, two conference championship field athlete of the year honors and a conference championship rookie of the year award. The Bobcats also produced 27 individual conference champions, six New England champions and five ECAC champions.
His athletes established conference championship records in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 200m and 400m and totaled 45 school-record performances. Belanger's athletes also set New England Championship meet records in the 60m hurdles and 400m.
Belanger is a USA Track & Field National Level Certified Official and holds a USA Track & Field Level 2 certification in sprints, hurdles and relays. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Newington High School in Connecticut, as the head cross country and track & field coach in 2009. During his tenure, the program produced three individual class state champions and 10 school records.
Belanger competed collegiately at Central Connecticut State University as a sprinter and jumper. He earned his degree in industrial technology with specializations in environmental and occupational safety in 2010.
Belanger and his wife, Kristina, have two sons, Calvin and Jett.
