Shane Vernarsky joined the W&M staff in the summer of 2014 and was promoted to Director of Athletics Equipment Services in July 2021 after previously serving as the head athletic equipment manager.
In his position, he organizes and manages a student work force and is responsible for all inventory and coordination of field use for the football program. He also is responsible for the stewardship of all the team’s various vendor contracts.
One of the best in his profession, Vernarsky was recognized for his outstanding work when he was honored as a national finalist for the Raw Athletics Equipment Manager of the Year in 2014.
During his time with the Tribe, Vernarsky has implemented a first-class student-manager program that includes a dozen assistants each year. Highlighting those workers are a pair of assistants who have gone on to earn internships with NFL teams.
Vernarsky came to the W&M after serving as an assistant equipment manager at James Madison, as he worked with the program’s football and basketball teams.
Prior to joining the Dukes’ staff, he worked as a student equipment manager at San Jose State University from 2006-11. In addition to assuming the role of head student manager in 2007, he was part of the SJSU football team’s New Mexico Bowl victory and served as an intern with Team USA Football.
Vernarsky got his start at College of the Desert Community College, where he served as an equipment manager from 2003-06.
Vernarsky has been a member of the Athletic Equipment Manager Association since 2007 and earned his Athletic Equipment Manager Certification (E.M.C.) in 2012.
