Pete Clawson has been a fixture in the William & Mary Athletics Department since coming to campus in the spring of 1995. After serving in a variety of roles within the Athletics Media Relations Department, he was most recently promoted to the role of Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations and Strategic Communications in the summer of 2018.
Clawson, a 1990 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, has overseen all facets of the Tribe’s athletics communications since 1999. During that span of time, Clawson has helped develop and implement a wide array of ‘firsts’ in the department’s long history, including developing and serving as the executive producer of the department’s live broadcasting efforts.
In his current role, Clawson is the official departmental spokesperson and responsible for all external communications, including coordinating video and photography. His team is responsible for populating the department’s athletics website and all social media channels for its 23 varsity sports. Along with his role in the live streaming platform, he also coordinates all facets of on-air talent and content on the school’s radio network.
He is a member of the campus’ Visual Identity committee, which is responsible for developing and maintaining the university’s brand style guide and creating guidelines meant to bring consistency to the use of logos and graphics across the university. Additionally, he serves on the universities’ Intercommunication Council and the Cross Campus Editorial Group.
A member of the department’s Senior Leadership Team since 2011, he is currently in his second year as the sports administrator for Tribe baseball, where he works closely with the staff on all phases of the program and serves as its liaison to both the department and league. Clawson has previously served in the same role for the lacrosse, women’s tennis and men’s and women’s gymnastics programs.
While he has worked in some facet with every program on campus, he has been the main media contact for the Tribe Football program since 1995. In that time, he has worked with six conference championship teams which have generated over 200 all-conference awardees and more than 70 All-Americans.
Prior to his stint at W&M, Clawson was an assistant Sports Information Director at Fresno State. Clawson has also spent time as an assistant SID at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, and at the University of Florida.
Clawson is married to the former Catherine Merril, a 1998 William & Mary graduate, and the couple resides in Williamsburg with their three children, Charlie, Marty and Mick.
