Pat McKenna

Pat McKenna spent four season as an assistant baseball coach. He joined the Tribe coaching ranks after finishing his professional baseball career.

During the 2019 season, McKenna helped to Tribe record its sixth 30-plus win season in the previous eight years. A third-place finish in the CAA standings allowed W&M to make its sixth postseason appearance in seven years. Position players Zach Pearson and Brandon Raquet earned spots on the All-Conference team under McKenna’s tutelage.

In 2017 McKenna helped, the Green and Gold landed five players on the all-conference teams, highlighted by junior Cullen Large receiving All-CAA First Team accolades. Furthermore, senior Ryder Miconi repeated as CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year, while All-CAA second teamer Brandon Raquet was named to Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman All-American Team. W&M also had a draft class of three or more players for the fifth time in program history. Redshirt sophomore Nick Raquet became the third-highest all-time MLB draft pick by getting selected in the third round by the Washington Nationals, Large was chosen in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays and senior Nick Brown was picked in the 32nd round by the Minnesota Twins. It’s the second time in program history that two players were taken inside the first five rounds of the MLB Draft.

This is not McKenna’s first time coaching and also not his first time in Williamsburg. He served as a volunteer coach during the fall of 2012, working with the Tribe’s infielders and hitters. The following spring, the Tribe advanced to the NCAA Raleigh Regional Final. During the offseason, he has worked with Play Ball in Salem, N.H. where he coached the Northeast Hurricanes AAU Program working with 9U-15U players. McKenna also organized and coached numerous clinics and held private instructional lessons with the organization. While with the Normal Cornbelters, he also served as a coach with Heartland Community College, focusing on the development of hitters and infielders.

McKenna was a 27th round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2009 MLB Draft. He went on to play parts of three seasons with the organization reaching Advanced-A with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He later joined the San Diego Padres organization where he played in Double-A and Triple-A with the San Antonio Missions and the Tucson Padres. McKenna played four years with the Normal Cornbelters of the Frontier League where he was four-time selection to the Frontier League All-Star team. He just wrapped his season with Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League, helping them advance to the league’s championship.

McKenna played for Murphy and former Tribe head coach Jamie Pinzino at Bryant in Smithfield, R.I. He started four years at shortstop and was a team captain for his final three seasons. He holds the all-time career and single-season records for walks, triples, assists, home runs, and runs scored. He helped the Bulldogs to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and NCAA Division II Regional Finals in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. McKenna was named the 2009 Bryant Male Athlete of the Year, before earning the shortstop spot on Bryant’s All-Decade Team in 2010.

Originally from Orange, Connecticut, McKenna earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Bryant in 2009.
