Brian Murphy spent seven seasons as W&M's head basketball coach and eight overall. In that time he has guided the Green and Gold to four 30-win seasons, five CAA-Tournament appearances, and a trip to the NCAA Regional Final. Before his promotion in 2014, Murphy helped the Tribe earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament at-large bid and win its first regional games in school history on the strength of a record-setting 39-win season in 2013. Murphy made a seamless transition to head coach the following year as W&M secured its first-ever regular season conference title, culminating in CAA Coach of the Year honors. In 2016, he would lead the Tribe their first CAA tournament championship since 2001 en route to reaching the NCAA Regional Final for the second time in four years.

Throughout his tenure at William & Mary, Murphy has coached 24 All-CAA selections highlighted by 2014 Conference Player of the Year Michael Katz. During his stint in the William & Mary dugout, Murphy has seen nine of his players selected in the MLB Draft. The 2017 draft saw Nick Raquet and Cullen Large both taken in the first five rounds.

Murphy’s teams have succeeded on the diamond, but have also excelled in the classroom. In 2019, Tribe baseball was recognized by the ABCA winning the Team Academic Award for the third straight season. Kevin Nutter,  Hunter Smith, and Brandon Raquet were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2014, 2019, and 2020 respectively while Ryan Hall was named to the Academic All-District Team in 2017.
