Brian Casey

Brian Casey served as the Tribe's pitching coach, while he is also the Green and Gold's recruiting coordinator before accepting the head coaching position at Coast Guard Academy. During his eight years, Casey has helped the Tribe record five 30-plus win seasons, make two NCAA Regional Final appearances and qualify for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament each season. Prior to his time at W&M, he spent five seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Tufts University in Medford, MA.

In 2019, Casey helped the Tribe to a 30-win season for the fifth time in seven seasons. With Casey’s guidance, the Tribe pitching staff finished the year with a 3.84 Team ERA and held opponents to a .245 BAA. Senior pitcher Bodie Sheehan finished his career with a William & Mary-high 55 starts and was named to the CAA All-Conference Team while Zach Tsakounis earned CAA All-Rookie honors. The 2019 staff also saw Tribe reliever Jamie Sara selected in the 25th round of the 2019 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Prior to the 2019 season, Casey was a clinician for the ABCA Barnstormers Clinic in the fall of 2018.

In 2017, W&M earned its fifth straight postseason bid, which was a program-best since qualifying started for the CAA Baseball Tournament. The weekend rotation played a major role in helping the Green & Gold finish third in the conference as the Tribe swept three of its CAA series. Individually, senior Nick Brown led the league with eight saves and sophomore Bodie Sheehan ranked second behind 90.1 innings pitched. For the first time since ’08, multiple Tribe pitchers were taken in the MLB Draft. Redshirt-sophomore Nick Raquet became the third-highest all-time draft selection after getting selected in the third round by the Washington Nationals, while Brown went in the 32nd round to the Minnesota Twins.

The 2016 season saw Tribe capture the CAA Tournament crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Regional knocked out Bryant and defending national champion Virginia on its way to its second Regional Final in four seasons. When all was said and done the Green and Gold won six elimination games against Northeastern, College of Charleston, UNCW (twice), Bryant, and Virginia. Individually Casey helped lead two of his pitchers to postseason honors as junior Daniel Powers was named to the third-team and freshman Bodie Sheehan was named to the all-rookie squad. Prior to the season, Casey spoke at the 2016 ABCA National Coaches Convention.

In 2014, Casey was part of the Tribe’s first-ever CAA regular season title. A record setting 39-win season in 2013 allowed the Green and Gold to earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament at-large bid and win its first regional games in school history.

Since he joined the Tribe, Casey’s influence has led to a total of seven W&M pitchers earning opportunities at the professional level and ten Tribe hurlers gaining All-CAA laurels, including first teamers John Farrell (2013) and Joseph Gaouette (2014). Casey also mentored a quartet of record-breaking pitchers. Most recently, Charlie Fletcher became the program's all-time appearance leader (105) in 2018. Jason Inghram, a 2015 graduate, replaced the school’s all-time wins mark (26) and became the second pitcher in program history to record more than 300 strikeouts. Gaouette owns W&M’s all-time saves record (18), while Farrell set a new single-season wins standard (11).

Casey began his coaching career at Tufts University where he worked with the Jumbos infielders and hitters and also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. During Casey's five years as an assistant, the Jumbos made four postseason appearances, including back-to-back NESCAC titles in 2010 and 2011 and #1 seeds in the NCAA New England Regionals. Off the field, Casey was also responsible for the organizing the team’s strength and conditioning program, coordinating their annual winter clinic and summer baseball placement.

Collegiately, Casey was a four-year member of Tufts' baseball team (2004-2007). A team captain in 2007, Casey earned second-team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) honors.  He also garnered second-team All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) accolades as a SS/P.  Casey was the recipient of the Tufts Jit Ricker award, which is given to the individual who exemplifies dedication, loyalty, and competitive desire.  Casey was a member of the 2005-2007 Jumbo teams that made the NESCAC playoffs, including final appearances in 2006 and 2007. After graduation from 2008-11, Casey was a member of the Watertown Reds of the Intercity League, an amateur baseball team in the Boston, MA area.  While with the Reds, Casey was a four time all-star selection and earned Intercity League co-pitcher of the year distinctions in 2010 and 2011.

Casey graduated from Tufts in 2007 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science.  In 2010, he earned a Master's degree in Educational Studies from his alma mater.  He is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, and was also a member of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (2007-12) and Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association (2007-12).
