William & Mary Athletics

The WMAF restructuring will create cohesion and efficiency by simplifying and streamlining its operations. Tax and audit functions will become part of the William & Mary Foundation. However, the WMAF can accept gifts in its own right and have its own board. These changes ultimately allow our fundraising arm to more directly allocate our supporters’ generosity by ensuring gifts go to areas most crucial to our department’s operations.

There are no current plans to remove the Tribe from William & Mary Athletics. The change from Tribe Club to William & Mary Athletic Foundation is being done to reflect more cohesion and efficiency by simplifying and streamlining its operations as it transitions under the William & Mary Foundation umbrella. 

Moving forward, this group will now be called the Tribe Athletics Advisory Council, with responsibilities to assist the WMAF in areas including, but not limited to: committee development, enhancing a culture of philanthropy, volunteer engagement as well as the fan and game experience. Members will also serve on newly created councils aimed at specific demographics of the WMAF. They include the sports-specific councils, the Parent’s Council, the Recent Alumni Council and the Women in Action Council. These councils will take a targeted approach to generate continued support of their designated constituency.

Gifts can be directed to the William & Mary Athletic Foundation (WMAF) as we will begin operating under the official name starting July 1, 2021, while completing this transition.

No, this change is not related to the renaming of buildings on campus.
