QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

AMATEURISM
  1. ACTIVITIES THAT COULD RENDER YOU INELIGIBLE
  • Using athletics skill for pay in any form
  • Accepting a promise of pay in the future
  • Signing a contract to play professional athletics
  • Receiving compensation or remuneration from a professional sports organization based on athletics skill or participation
  • Competing with professional athletes on an outside team
  • Entering into an agreement with an agent
  • PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
  • NO endorsement of commercial product or service
  • NO involvement in promotional activities (autograph signing, personal appearance without permission

GAMBLING
  1. IMPERMISSIBLE TO:
  • Accept or solicit a wager of any type on your own behalf or on behalf of others with any organization on any intercollegiate, amateur or professional team or contest
  • No internet sports wagering, auctions in which bids are placed on teams, pools or fantasy leagues
  • Provide information to individuals concerning team dynamics or status of injured players
  • Engage in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss margins
  1. SANCTIONS
  • Range from one year loss of eligibility to permanent loss of all remaining regular season and post season eligibility

NCAA DRUG TESTING POLICY
  1. CONSENT FORM REQUIRED FOR ALL D-I PARTICIPANTS
  1. RANDOM TESTING ON CAMPUS AT LEAST ONE TIME PER ACADEMIC YEAR
  • Failure to report if selected equates to a positive test
  • Must test negative prior to reinstatement
  1. FIRST POSITIVE RESULT
  • Ineligible to compete for one year from the date of the test
  • Charged with a season of eligibility
  • Must retest and file for reinstatement with the NCAA
  1. SUBSEQUENT POSITIVE RESULT
  • Recreational/Street Drug-ineligible for one year and charged with a season of eligibility
  • Banned Performance Enhancing Substance-PERMANENT INELIGIBLITY IN ALL SPORTS

ELIGIBILITY
  1. CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY
  • Entering 2nd Year (Third semester)
    • Enrolled in minimum of 12 hours
    • 24 credits earned
    • 18 credits earned during previous Fall / Spring semesters
    • 90 % of GPA for graduation (1.8)
    • 6 credits during previous regular term of full time enrollment
  • Entering 3rd Year (Fifth semester)
    • Enrolled in minimum of 12 hours
    • 40% of degree credits earned (48 hours)
    • 18 credits earned during previous Fall / Spring semesters
    • 95 % of GPA for graduation (1.9)
    • 6 credits during previous regular term of full time enrollment
    • Must have declared a major
  • Entering 4th Year (Seventh semester)
    • Enrolled in minimum of 12 hours
    • 60% of degree credits earned (72 hours)
    • 18 credits earned during previous Fall / Spring semesters
    • 100 % of GPA for graduation (2.0)
    • 6 credits during previous regular term of full time enrollment
  • Entering 5th Year (Ninth semester)
    • Enrolled in minimum of 12 hours
    • 80% of degree credits earned (96 hours)
    • 18 credits earned during previous Fall / Spring semesters
    • 100 % of GPA for graduation (2.0)
    • 6 credits during previous regular term of full time enrollment

ELIGIBILITY
  1. TRANSFER ELIGIBILITY
  • GENERAL RULE: All transfer student-athletes must serve one year residence requirement prior to being eligible for competition
  • One-time Transfer Exception available if:
  • You compete in a sport other than football, basketball, or baseball
  • You were academically & athletically eligible to return and compete at W&M (no positive drug test, no disciplinary suspension)
  • W&M grants the exception (this is decided on a case-by-case basis and is NOT guaranteed)
  • CAA Intra-Conference Transfer Rule (except football)
  • 2 Year Residence Requirement-No Waiver
  • Only applies to scholarship student-athletes/NLI signees

FINANCIAL AID
  1. ATHLETIC GRANT-IN-AID MAY INCLUDE
  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and board
  • Required course related books
  1. OUTSIDE SOURCES (other than from a parent/legal guardian)
  • Must be reported to the W&M Compliance Office
  • Must be from an agency that is not a representative of athletic interests for W&M (e.g. booster, sponsor)
  1. RENEWAL/NON RENEWAL
  • Each grant-in-aid is for maximum and minimum of one academic year
  • Notification of renewal/nonrenewal by JULY 1
  1. CANCELLATION / REDUCTION DURING THE TERM OF THE AWARD
  • Academically or Athletically Ineligible to Compete
  • Serious misconduct resulting in disciplinary action by the institution or law enforcement
  • Fraudulent misrepresentation on the grant-in-aid or admissions application
  • Voluntarily quit the team

STUDENT ATHLETE EMPLOYMENT
  1. PERMISSIBLE IF:
  • Paid for work you actually perform
  • Paid at the going rate for similar services in the locale
  1. WITH A SPORT CAMP/CLINIC/LOCAL SPORT CLUB
  • Must receive PRIOR approval from W&M Compliance Office
  • Must be paid going rate and for work actually performed
  1. FEE FOR LESSON
  • Must receive PRIOR approval from W&M Compliance Office
  • Cannot use institutional facilities
  • Cannot use your name/picture to advertise (word of mouth only)
  • Must submit regular accounting of recipients and fees to W&M Compliance Office

AWARDS & BENEFITS

  1. EXTRA BENEFIT
  • Any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of athletic interests to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation or not available to all W&M students in general.
  • Examples (but not limited to:)
Cash
Gifts-Hat, Clothing, Car, Airline Ticket/Miles
Entertainment-Invitation to a boosters beach home
Free or discounted services (e.g. free meal in sponsor restaurant)
Transportation or use of a car
Loan of money or guarantee of a loan

  1. OCCASSIONAL MEAL
  • Infrequent & Special Occasions
ONE TIME PER MONTH PER STUDENT-ATHLETE
  • Institutional Staff Member-In the home or in a restaurant
  • Booster-ONLY in the home or in institutional facility (e.g. The Caf)
  • Transportation-ONLY in Williamsburg by the booster hosting the meal
  • PRIOR approval by W&M Compliance Office required

AWARDS & BENEFITS

  1. APPAREL & EQUIPMENT
  • Retention of Apparel Items-Permissible at the end of your intercollegiate participation
  • Used Equipment-May be purchased by the student-athlete on the same cost basis as by any other individual interested in purchasing such equipment (less any amount invested by the student-athlete to acquire the equipment)
  • Summer use of Athletics Equipment-Permissible to retain and use equipment during the summer
  • Practice and game apparel are to be used for official team functions only

PLAYING SEASONS

  1. COUNTABLE ATHLETICALLY RELATED ACTIVITIES
  • Any required activity with an athletic purpose at the direction of or supervised by an institution's coaching staff.
  • Examples:
    • Practice
    • Competition
    • Weight Training
    • Conditioning
    • Team Meetings to review plays, strategy, etc.
  1. LIMITS DURING PLAYING SEASON & ACADEMIC YEAR
  • Four (4) Hours Per Day
  • Twenty (20) Hours Per Week
  • One Day Off Per Week
  1. LIMITS OUTSIDE PLAYING SEASON
  • Eight (8) Hours Per Week Conditioning and lifting
  • Two (2) of the eight hours for skill instruction
  • Two Days Off Per Week

STUDENT HOST GUIDELINES
  1. $40 PER DAY FOR ACTUAL COSTS OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR YOU AND RECRUIT
  • Additional $20 per day for each additional recruit
  • May not use personal funds/ask prospect to use personal funds for entertainment that exceeds the full amount of host funds
  • Must submit receipts for all funds spent on a prospect
  • May not purchase souvenirs, such as T-shirt or other institutional mementos for the prospect
  1. ENTERTAINMENT MUST BE WITHIN 30 MILES OF CAMPUS
  2. PARTICIPATION IN VOLUNTARY ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES ONLY
  3. NO ALCOHOL PROVIDE TO / PURCHASED FOR A PROSPECT
