Student-athlete involvement in gambling activities on athletic events is strictly prohibited. The NCAA and the College of William and Mary view all infractions of the gambling/sport wagering rules to be serious. Penalties almost always include the loss of eligibility for involved student-athletes.
NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from engaging in gambling activities as they related to intercollegiate, amateur or professional sport events.
This includes practice activities, scrimmages and exhibitions.
A student-athlete shall not knowingly:
- Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team;
- Accept a bet on any team representing the institution;
- Participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling.
- Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition;
Examples of sports wagering include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The use of a bookmaker or parlay card;
- Internet sports wagering;
- Auctions in which bids are placed on teams, individuals, or contests;
- Pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize (e.g. NCAA tournament brackets, NFL fantasy leagues, etc.).
Additionally providing information about the status of the team or about specific teammates (e.g. injuries, who is starting, etc.) with anyone who places bets or is a known gambler, or engaging in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss margins (“point shaving”) shall result in permanent loss of all remaining regular season and postseason eligibility in all sports.
