An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of William and Mary's athletics interests (donors, booster club members, corporate sponsors, former student-athletes of William and Mary) to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by a student-athlete or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to William and Mary students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g. foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
Examples of extra benefits that are not permissible by NCAA rules include, but are not limited to the following:
- A special discount, payment arrangement or credit on a purchase (e.g. airline ticket, sponsor hotel discount, clothing) or a service (e.g. dry cleaning, hair cut)
- A professional service without charge or at a reduced cost (e.g. legal counsel)
- The use of a telephone or credit card for personal reasons
- Free or reduced-cost admission to professional athletic contests from professional sports organizations;
- A gift or loan of money;
- The use of an automobile;
- Signing or co-signing a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan;
- Preferential treatment, benefits or services for your athletic reputation or skill or payback potential as a future professional athlete.
- Transportation (e.g. a ride home to Northern Virginia with a coach going there to recruit)
- Gifts of clothes, food, or other tangible items.
- Gifts of providing you entertainment, such as a round of golf, use of a boat or Jet Ski, or use of tickets to a sporting event.
Occasional Meals. A student-athlete may receive an occasional meal from an institutional staff member in the locale of the institution. A student-athlete may receive an occasional family home meal from a
representative of athletics interests on infrequent and special occasions provided the meal is in the individual's home and local transportation to the meal may be provided as long as it is within the locale of the institution (30 mile radius from campus). For purposes of this rule, occasional is defined as no more than one time per calendar month per student-athlete.
