Student-athletes are permitted to seek employment and receive compensation with prior approval from the athletics compliance office. Individuals must be paid only for work performed and at a rate comparable to others performing the same or similar duties. Please request the Student-Employment form from the W&M Compliance Office. Student-athletes employed by a local sports club or by an institutional or non-institutional camp or clinic either during the academic year or during the summer must receive prior approval from the Compliance Office. A student-athlete may not be employed by and paid for only athletic demonstration or athletic reputation at a sport camp or clinic. Fee for Lessons. A student-athlete may receive compensation for teaching or coaching sport skills or techniques in his or her sport on a fee for lesson basis provided:
  • Institutional facilities are not used (W&M Hall, Adair, Rec Center, Zable Stadium, Dillard practice field, etc.);
  • Playing lessons are not permitted;
  • The institution obtains and keeps on file documentation of the recipient of lessons and the fee for the lessons provided during any time of the year;
  • Compensation is paid by the lesson recipient or his or her family only and not another individual or entity;
  • Instruction to each individual is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson when the instruction involves more than one individual at a time;
  • The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture or appearance to promote or advertise the availability of the fee-for-lesson sessions.
