All students at William & Mary are responsible for their collegiate experience and for their actions while functioning as a member of the Tribe community. For student-athletes, there are additional challenges and responsibilities inherent in the choice to participate as an intercollegiate athlete. Actions required to meet basic responsibilities are as follows: Â Â
- Understand that earning a degree is the primary goal of William & Mary student athletes.
- Attend all classes and be an active and involved participant. A student's success is often directly related to class attendance and participation. Follow established procedures for requesting permission to miss class due to athletic competition.
- Comply with all University, Conference and NCAA rules regarding amateurism, sportsmanship, initial and continuing academic eligibility and standards of conduct.
- Adhere to all team and departmental rules of conduct.
- Twice per academic year, attend an NCAA rules review meeting and certify compliance by signing the NCAA Student-Athlete Statement. The rules are complicated and they can change, so it is important to ask the question if you are not sure of the application of a rule. Ignorance of a rule does not constitute an acceptable justification for violation of a rule.
- All freshmen and transfers are required to attend a mandatory orientation program. As part of both the freshman and transfer orientation programs all students must attend a session to review the Honor Code. The Honor Code, as noted in the William & Mary Student Handbook, is a valued tradition at the University. All students must accept severe consequences for any breach of honor.
- Take advantage of all academic support services offered to you by William & Mary. Student-athletes should contact the Athletic Department Office of Academic Support for assistance in accessing existing campus or departmental services. Be proactive and address concerns immediately.
- Freshman student-athletes must participate in the 'The Academy' program offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
- Meet regularly with your assigned faculty advisor. Your faculty academic advisor is the primary point of contact for you as you plan your academic career.  Â
- Follow all policies and procedures established by the Division of Sports Medicine. The prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries are of primary concern.
- Review and follow all guidelines set by the NCAA and the William & Mary Drug Education, Intervention and Testing Policy.
- At all times represent the University with the utmost integrity, honor, dedication and pride.
