Online communities were created with the intent of providing a means for shared information and experiences which would enhance a positive sense of community. When properly used, online communities can meet the intended purpose. However, in all cases, information is shared on a public domain with unlimited access. Individuals choosing to participate in online journals must protect themselves and others from the negative impact caused by inappropriate postings of information or pictures and the potential misuse of information posted on a member profile.
- Be safe and smart when providing personal information. Cyber communities exist on a public domain with unlimited access. Never provide your phone number, address or social security number. Incidents of stalking through voicemail, email and on-line messages are a real concern on college campuses.
- Control who has access to your profile by limiting the privacy setting on all postings.
- Participation in intercollegiate athletics is a privilege, not a right. Inherent in the choice to participate is acceptance of the responsibility to at all times positively represent yourself, the University, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and your Team. You are accountable for pictures or materials posted to your site which negatively represent any of these entities.
- While the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics does not routinely monitor cyber sites or online journals, we reserve the right to do so should there be cause. Disciplinary action may result due to a breach of departmental or team codes of conduct.
- Again, it is a public domain and potential employers have access to your information! Be smart and protect your future!
