Athletic grants-in-aid are merit awards based on participation in the sport. Athletic grants range in value from a set dollar figure to a full grant-in-aid. At this time within the Colonial Athletic Association, the maximum allowable NCAA athletic grant-in-aid is limited to the actual costs as defined below.

Tuition and General Fees: The actual cost of tuition and the general fees, as set by the College. Course-related fees are the financial responsibility of the individual student. For example, if a music course has an additional $100 fee, the individual student is responsible for payment of the fee. Fees for courses required in a student-athlete’s major may be considered for full scholarship students. Please submit a request for consideration to the Director of Compliance.

Room: The actual cost of on-campus housing. Although this fee may vary by residence hall, the full amount is considered a permissible athletic expense.

Full athletic grant-in-aid recipients approved for off-campus housing receive the average cost of on-campus housing for each semester, as determined by the Director of Financial Aid, as a credit on their student-account at the beginning of each semester. Student athletes are then permitted to request a refund from the Bursar’s Office to receive those monies in a refund check.

Board: The maximum board plan approved for full scholarship student-athletes is the 19-meal plan, or Gold Plan. Individuals may choose a plan offered at a higher cost, but the individual student is financially responsible for any expense above the cost of the Gold Plan. A full scholarship student-athlete may select a meal allotment and receive the equivalent to the semester cost of the 19-meal plan as a credit on their student-account at the beginning of each semester.

Books: For student-athletes receiving books as part of the grant-in-aid package, the permissible payment is for actual required course related books, not to include supplies. See below for procedures for securing and returning books.

Outside Scholarships: As a student-athlete, financial aid from any and all sources other than your parent or legal guardian may be considered countable athletic aid and therefore countable when calculating the NCAA individual and team limits. You must report all outside sources of financial aid to the Compliance Office. Failure to report all sources of financial aid shall result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible for practice and competition and requiring reinstatement by the NCAA.

College policy mandates that students receiving both need-based aid and merit-based aid may not have a total award package which exceeds the designated need as determined by the Federal Financial Aid Form. The Director of Financial Aid may retroactively adjust a student’s financial aid package to assure compliance with this regulation.
