William & Mary Athletics

NCAA Championships History

William & Mary's rise to national prominence is due, at least in part, to the team's success at the NCAA Championships. On 26 occasions, the Tribe has competed in the NCAA Championships as a team, while also sending numerous individuals to the NCAA Championships in singles and doubles. In total, the Tribe has placed the team, a singles player and a doubles team in same NCAA Championships during 17 seasons.

The Tribe's 26 appearances rank 20th nationally and second among non-Power 4 schools. W&M is 21-26 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including an 18-13 mark at the regional level. The Green and Gold's 21 wins in the NCAA Tournament rank 27th nationally and are second, only to Pepperdine, among non-Power 4 programs. On seven occasions, W&M advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship, including back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 1997 and 1998.

Although W&M had previously placed athletes in the NCAA Tournament as individuals or doubles teams, William & Mary first reached the NCAAs as a team in 1989. In the spring of 1992, the Tribe achieved its first victory at the NCAA Tournament, defeating 15th-ranked Miami in the first round.

In the spring of 1997 the Tribe earned its first victory in the round of 16. The Green and Gold posted a 5-0 victory over fifth-ranked Georgia to earn a trip to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. In 1998, the Tribe again advanced to the quarterfinals earning a 5-3 victory over sixth-ranked California in the round of 16.

In 2007, the Tribe returned to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season. The College garnered the No. 15 seed in the tournament and hosted the NCAA Regional, while rolling past Richmond and Wake Forest.

The Tribe saw its first NCAA All-American in 1991 when Kristine Kurth advanced to the second round. Julie Shiflet would pick up the honor in 1992 when she reached the round of 16. Karen van der Merwe earned two of her three All-America honors in 1992 when she advanced to the round of 16 on the singles side and teamed with Michele Mair to reach the round of 16 on the doubles side. She added her third honor in doubles in 1993 when she teamed with Katrin Guenther to reach the quarterfinals. Guenther would add another All-America honor in 1995 when she teamed with Lauren Nikolaus to reach the quarterfinals at the NCAAs. Nikolaus would add a whopping five more All-America honors to the Tribe's trophy case, as she captured the award in singles in 1996, 1997 and 1998 and in doubles with Johanna Sones in 1997 and Michelle O in 1998.

The first individual to represent the Tribe was Namratha Appa-Roa, who qualified in the singles draw in 1986. During the past 31 years, W&M has placed a member of the team in the singles draw of the NCAAs 34 times, while 20 teams (on 24 occasions) qualified for the doubles championship.

Moulton-Levy and Candice Fuchs competed in the NCAA Doubles Tournament in 2005, with Moulton-Levy also earning a berth in the singles tournament. The duo reached the quarterfinals of the event and earned All-American honors. It was the second straight year that a W&M doubles team reached the quarterfinals, as 2006 graduate Megan Muth and 2005 graduate Amy Wei also accomplished the feat in 2004.

In 2006, Moulton-Levy left her mark on the NCAA Singles Championship, becoming the first W&M player to advance to the semifinals of the 64-player tournament. She earned All-America honors for the second time in her career, defeating a pair of top-10 foes on the way to the semifinals. Moulton-Levy went on to garner All-America honors in singles during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Although William & Mary can boast of team accomplishments at the NCAA Championships, numerous individuals and doubles teams have also had success at the NCAAs. Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Doubles Tournament in 2007, the deepest a W&M doubles team or singles player has ever advanced at the event. A year later, the pair advanced to the quarterfinals to earn All-America honors for the second straight season.

Including its time in the AIAW, a total of 18 different Tribe athletes have earned 36 All-America honors. Ten different W&M singles players on 16 occasions have been named All-American, while 10 different doubles teams and a total of 13 different players have received All-America honors in doubles. In the NCAA, 13 different athletes have captured 27 All-America honors for William & Mary, while 32 different athletes have represented the team in 58 events at the NCAAs in either singles or doubles since 1986. In singles, 21 different players have competed at the NCAA Individual Championships on 34 occasions, while 20 doubles teams have played a total of 24 times at the NCAA Doubles Championships.
